Ahhhh - The Stress of the First Dance Song | The Budget Savvy Bride
The Budget Savvy Bride

Who knew that picking the song to dance to for our first dance would be so stressful? I thought it would be easy; my music loving fiance would suggest something, send me a link and I’d be all YAY! I LOVE IT! That so has not happened! So far, we’ve gone back and forth suggesting songs to each other and not finding anything we love and feel is us and first dance appropriate (slow, but not too slow, the right lyrics, the right artist, not too cliche, etc.)

Here are some of the songs we have send to eachother:

Jimmy Eat World – For Me This is Heaven

Elvis – Can’t Help Falling in Love

New Found Glory – The Story So Far (Acoustic)

Coheed & Cambria – Wake UP

Rise Against – Swing Life Away

Same issues as before, they wouldn’t be something we could easily dance to. Nick thought the Elvis song is a little sad sounding, I like it, and he loves Elvis. My younger brother is a talented singer and guitar player and he said he would be willing to play and sing a song for us, but we still have to pick something. I’ve searched the web for some inspiration, but I keep seeing the same things and none of them feel right. So, we’re back to square one trying to choose a song and having a pretty hard time. I can’t decide if that means that I don’t care about it or that I care too much! What do you think?

Nick is also very nervous about dancing, so we’re thinking about taking some lessons so that it will feel a little more natural for both of us. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a bad first dance, because they are always sweet and meaningful, but I can imagine you’re felling overly nervous already and emotional, it’s easy to get caught up in the moment and forget what you’re supposed to be doing! We found out from a friend that there is a studio near us where you can try a lesson for free before you sign up for other classes, so I think we will end up doing that.

Did you take dance lessons before your wedding? Did you have a hard time picking your first dance song? Have you known what your song will be for a while? Are you still struggling?

I just got married a few weeks ago and we struggled with this too. Eventually we stepped back and talked about how we wanted our first dance to look and feel and let that guide our song selection. We took one dance class geared toward couples who needed help with their first dance and agreed we wanted something we could foxtrot or swing to. I put together a playlist of songs and we practiced dancing to them in our kitchen–really helped rule out songs we had hoped would work but were not the right tempo or whatever. In the end we went with Fly Me to the Moon as our first dance and You Are the Sunshine of My Life for the parent-child dance; they may be a little cliche but there is a good reason they are used so often! Plus, now I have an extra sentimental attachment to both, and hearing them unexpectedly brings back some of the joy from the wedding.

    Good luck!

    • We just signed up to take a dance class as well. They asked us to bring our song – which we finally decided will be Can’t Help Falling in Love by Elvis. I think it will be perfect for us, I like the lyrics, I like Elvis and I think the tempo will be just right. I’ll know after tomorrow when we have our first dance lesson! I’ve actually never danced with Nick at a wedding, he just doesn’t like to dance and I LOVE to dance. I was talking to FMIL yesterday and she said that she and her husband are the same way, he loves to dance and she does not – you just gotta make it work! Also, I love that song – Fly Me to the Moon, so fun! If Nick was more of a dancer, I’d love to do a first dance like that with a little choreography! Did you do your father/daughter dance and mother/son dance at the same time?
