The Budget Savvy Bride » Mel helping brides create beautiful weddings without breaking the bank Wed, 01 Apr 2015 23:55:08 +0000 en-US hourly 1 Budget-friendly skin care Thu, 19 Jul 2012 16:35:28 +0000 As a make-up artist, skin care is the base for beautiful looking make-up. Here is my simple skin care routine that won’t break the bank, but it will leave you with clean, smooth skin!

What you will need:
1. white, granulated sugar
2. cotton round pads
3. pure lemon juice
4. make-up remover
5. peel-off facial mask

1. Prepare two cotton round pads for your skin exfoliating step. I recommend using one cotton pad for one side of the face, and the second for the other side of the face. Pour a few drops of lemon juice on each pad. Lemon juice is a natural exfoliant and can even help remove blackheads and discolored areas. It is also a natural skin brightener. Then pour some granulated sugar on each pad. The sugar plays the main role in removing dead skin cells and leave the skin feeling smooth.

2. Wash your face with warm water. The warm water will open up your pores and make it easier to remove dirt and bacteria. Use your make-up remover (if needed), to remove any leftover make-up. I recommend Boots Botanics cleansing wipes.

3.  Use the two pre-made exfoliating pads with lemon and sugar. As mentioned, I use one per half-side of the face. Rub in a circular motion and concentrate on any dry spots or acne prone areas. Once you’re finished, wash your face with warm water to get rid of all the sugar. Your face will appear a little more red than usual, but your skin will feel soft and smooth.

4. Once a week, I apply the Freeman Facial Peel-Off Mask in Cucumber after exfoliating my skin. It is an inexpensive treat if you enjoy facial masks and smells great. This mask will leave your skin feeling renewed & soft. It’s also a great excuse to relax and have some ‘me-time’ for 10 minutes!

5. After the mask has dried, wash your face again with warm water. Once your face is clean, wash your face with cold water. The cold water will close up your pores and make them look smaller.

6. Last step: moisturize! I absolutely love and recommend Cetaphil cream. This product delivers immense moisture and is great for not only your face, but for your body too! It is also a great product for sensitive skin. Your skin will instantly feel nice and hydrated. Added bonus: if you want to sheer your foundation down, just mix in a dab of the Cetaphil cream with a few dabs of your foundation before applying. [Note: there is a difference between the Cetaphil cream and the lotion. I personally prefer the cream over the lotion.]

ps. For those of you who have oily skin, I recommend Peaches & Cream from Kiss My Face. It contains alpha hydroxy acids and is great for acne prone skin!

Happy skin care days!

Best wishes! XOXO

Natural Wedding Make-up under $100 Fri, 18 May 2012 13:00:06 +0000 Today I’m excited to welcome a new beauty expert and makeup artist, Mel from S3KA | Make-ography. She’ll be sharing budget beauty and makeup tips here on BSB! Please leave her lots of love and feel free to ask her any questions you have – who knows, they may come up in an upcoming blog post! - xoxo-Jessica

I’ve put together a list of tips & recommended products, from my local Target (prices my vary), on how to achieve the perfect, natural-looking bridal look under $100! I have personally  used all the products, and I’ve put together a list of must-haves (with a few alternatives) and the order to apply make-up. I’ve provided pictures of all the products below.

1. Clean Face
First, you need to start off with a clean face. If you have dry skin, be sure to exfoliate before applying any make-up. Wash your face with warm water and remove any make-up with a make-up remover. Be sure to wash your face with cold water once you’re all done to close up your pores. Apply a moisturizer, even if you have oily skin (just use an oil-free moisturizer) and wait 5 minutes before applying make-up.

2. Primer
I currently use (and love) L ‘Oreal’s Studio Secrets Face Primer. Why do I recommend it? It noticeably fills in any small wrinkles and smoothes the skin to a nice, velvety finish. It is currently sold for $11 and comes a cute jar. I would recommend applying it to areas where you may have small wrinkles and/or large pores. The primer will help retain moisture and act as a barrier between your skin and the foundation.

3. Foundation
L ‘Oreal also makes a medium coverage foundation- True Match Liquid Foundation- and is available for under $10. This foundation blends incredibly well and covers amazingly. It works great on all skin types and there is a large variety of colors to choose from.  I prefer applying this foundation with a damp sponge, but you can opt out and use a brush instead.

4. Powder
Rule of thumb: every time you use a liquid or a cream product, you should go over it with a powder. Why?! The powder absorbs any excess moisture and helps ‘set’ (retain) the product’s color and longevity. Sonia Kashuk’s Barely There Loose Powder, for $10, is a good loose powder that works perfectly over liquid foundation. Use a large, fluffy brush to apply powder by lightly dusting the face. Don’t pick up too much powder! It’s easier to apply more, rather than dealing with too much powder.

5. Eye Primer
Eye primers are the key to long-lasting eyeshadows! What most people don’t know, is that you can just use your concealer as an eyeshadow primer! Revlon’s PhotoReady Concealer (stick form) is extremely pigmented and creamy. It blends well and is very easy to apply. It’s available for $9 and comes in a variety of shades. I would recommend a concealer that is a shade lighter than your complexion. Make sure to dust some loose powder after applying the concealer to absorb any excess moisture.

6. Eyeshadow
I highly recommend Sonia Kashuk’s Eye On Neutral Palette. This eyeshadow palette has 12 eyeshadow colors that are perfect for a natural look. It’s only $20 and is very travel friendly. Be sure to apply the lighter eyeshadow colors first, working your way down to the dark shades. For a nice, romantic look, apply light shades to the inner 1/3 of the eyelid, then a medium color on the middle of the eyelid, and a dark brown or black on the outer corner and up to the crease. Blending is key in making all the colors come together beautifully.

7. Blush
Sonia Kashuk also makes amazing blushes, especially creme blushes ($10). The reason I recommend creme blushes over powder is that creme blushes look more natural. I recommend applying the blush first to the apples of the cheeks and then slowly blending toward the hairline. You can also apply the loose powder over the blush or leave it as is for a romantic, dewy look.

8. Bronzer
I highly recommend using a bronzer to add a little bit of color and countering to the face. Sonia Kashuk makes a wonderful pressed bronzer with a hint of shimmer for $10. Revlon’s PhotoReady powder, which is matte, also makes a nice powder, which can be used as a bronzer (be sure to pick a shade 2 shades darker than your complexion). I recommend applying bronzer to the hollows of the cheeks, the temples, forehead, down the nose, and slightly on the chin for a nice, sun-kissed look (which also contours the face).

9. Mascara
L ‘Oreal’s Voluminous Mascara is my #1 choice, and it’s only $6! This mascara not only makes your eyelashes look thicker, it also lengthens! I definitely recommend applying mascara to both the top and bottom lashes. Be sure to purchase the water-proof mascara just in case for those teary moments!

10. Lips
And finally… we’ve made it to the end… the lips! I personally love, use, and purchase for all my brides for many reasons. This product is AMAZING and there are so many wonderful shades to choose from! What product am I talking about? The one and only L ‘Oreal Infallible Lipcolor Duo for $10. It is actually a lip-paint and gloss product that comes in a cute, mirror-like package. It is extremely pigmented, applies flawlessly, and is kiss-proof! Now you don’t have to worry about leaving lipstick marks! Simply apply a coat of the lip-paint and wait until your lips feel sticky. If you feel that the lip color is pigmented enough skip directly to applying the gloss, if not, apply another coat and wait again. The gloss is not super shiny, but it will make your lips feel nice and smooth.

So there you have it! All these products are available at Target or and together cost less than $100! Now all you need is a little time to practice creating the perfect wedding make-up look!

Best wishes! XOXO
