Budget Saving Tips from The Plaza! Say what? | The Budget Savvy Bride
The Budget Savvy Bride

Okay, so I have to admit, this Budget Savvy Bride never thought she’d ever step foot inside the luxurious palacial structure that is The Plaza in NYC. You might remember The Plaza as the site that the two main characters fought over in the wedding movie Bride Wars- The Plaza is considered the ultimate wedding venue fit for royalty!

Although I never could’ve afforded a wedding at this opulent location, I couldn’t resist an opportunity to check out the fabulousness in person! I was honored to attend a Wedding Blogger Luncheon at the Plaza during my trip to NYC and I have to say it was amazing!

The food, prepared by Chef Marc Spooner, was incredibly presented and tasted even better than it looked. While these dishes might seem incredibly luxurious, there are some budget-savvy ideas to be taken away from their presentation:

  • having passed appetizers/tapas style selections can often cost much less than a sit down meal or buffet, and can create a more mingling and social environment for your reception
  • The Plaza gets their produce from local farms- a great way to stimulate the local economy and can definitely be less expensive- so ask your caterer if they work with local growers.
  • I especially loved the passed dessert selections- mini popsicles made with local fruit, and the Liquified Caramel Corn- talk about decadent! Miniature items are not only cute, but often feel fancy. What is it about tiny things that is so exciting?

Try not to drool over these images of the delish delicacies we dined on at the luncheon:

Presentation is everything- and the dishes and decor at the Plaza obviously looked flawless!

We got to hear the concepts and thoughts from David Beahm Design who created these amazing tablescapes- something you definitely expect to see at the Plaza, but are out of reach for many budget brides.

Some tips to create a luxe look on a budget:

  • using lots of clear vases and candles can take the place of flowers (for the extra savvy- try finding these vases at thrift stores or on craigslist for some extra savings)
  • if you can use mirrors on your table, they really add lots of sparkle to the table when paired with candles
  • use a mixture of high and low centerpieces for your table in order to create drama and personality
  • keep in mind that your guests need to be able to see each other- so if you use a high centerpiece, make sure it is well above or below your guests eye level for easy communication across the table
  • not using flowers can save you alot, but if you’re set on blossoming blooms- use them sparingly for a modern effect

So even though the Plaza might not be a perfect fit for a bride on a budget, I think I took away some good ideas on how to save money while not compromising beauty and taste!
