Since our caterer does not provide alcohol and we wanted to save money by purchasing our own alcohol we decided to do so during the Beverages and More (BevMo) 5 cent wine sale, woo hoo!
For those on the West Coast who have a BevMo I highly suggest you take advantage of this sale to buy your wedding booze if possible. It’s a great deal and they offer it 3 or 4 times a year!
Matt and I went on a Saturday during the sale when they have tastings. It was $2 to taste 6 different bottles of wine that they had chosen from the sale, but they also told us we could select a few more to try. Now, I’m not even going to pretend we know wine; we are lightweights, and even with cheese and salami breaks between glasses, we were both drunk by the end of the tasting! Luckily we didn’t embarrass ourselves.
We decided to stick to wine, champagne and beer for our celebration since this should please everyone and will be easier to serve. With that in mind we selected 2 reds and 2 whites plus 2 different champagnes (one cheap one pricier)
Neither of us are exactly wine connoisseurs so we just decided to go with what we enjoyed, nothing too bold or harsh, and under $20. The Malbec was $17 and the Zyn was $16, both were part of the sale so one case was $192 and the second case was only 60 cents!
For our bubbly toasts we decided to go with Domaine Carneros because Matt and I visited the winery in Napa a while back and really enjoyed it. This was our splurge as it wasn’t part of the wine sale and was $22 a bottle but we only bought 10 bottles. For the rest we purchased Conde De Subrats Cava Brut which is part of the sale and only $15
BevMo will store all the wine for us so we don’t have to worry about it, and since we spent over $500 we get free delivery. Truth be told we went over budget on the booze, we thought we would only spend around $600 but we ended up buying 118 bottles of booze for $1130. Yeah, way over, BUT BevMo will take back any unopened bottles so we can return what we don’t use and it’s better to have too much than too little, right? We can also use some of the bottles for the rehearsal dinner. BevMo calculated how many bottles we needed by the number of people (100) and the length of the event where people would be drinking (4) figuring about two drinks per person per hour.
We could have just ordered a bunch of cases of Charles Shaw at Trader Joes (two buck chuck!) and spent a lot less, but we decided to offer our guests a nicer drinking experience, hopefully they will appreciate it!
We are waiting to purchase the beer as we want it to be fresh. So about a month out we will add around 23 12 bottle cases of beer, three or four different varieties to please everyone. We will also get soft drinks for those not indulging in the hooch, I’m thinking Mexican Coke, Gingerale (it’s our favorite sodie!) and maybe some of those Izze sodas, but we will see. It may be cheaper to purchase that stuff at Costco.
I hope in the end we have too much and are able to return a bunch of it and get our actual cost on alcohol below $1000 but we will see Even if we don’t I feel like we got a good deal and am confident everyone will be happy with the selection.
