Dos and Don'ts of Groomswear: Tips for Choosing Men's Wedding Attire

One of my favorite wedding tasks was selecting attire for the guys, or as I’ve liked to call it, the groomswear. We decided to go the simple and savvy route by dropping in at Men’s Wearhouse. They really make it super easy since they’re affiliated with David’s Bridal, so you can match the suit and tie colors to coordinate best with their bridesmaid dresses. Talk about a time and sanity-saver!

Wedding Menswear: Do’s for the Groom & Groomsmen

B$B has a whole board dedicated to groomswear inspiration. Gone are the days of basic black suits with matching vests for all of the guys. There are so many options now from suit colors to ties to suspenders and more!

Do find a way to make your wedding party look cohesive.

This could be from matching the color of the bridesmaids‘ dresses to the groomsmen’s vests or ties, to coordinating the colors and flowers in their bouquets and boutonnieres.

Do set your soon-to-be spouse apart from the others.

This is something I didn’t think about before we chose our tuxes, but it makes total sense! You could do this by putting the groom in a different color suit than his guys, changing the color of vests or ties, or by having a different boutonniere than the groomsmen.

Do add a simple detail.

I once attended a wedding where the groom loved to yo-yo. He wore a yo-yo hanging from his belt loop! What a creative way to bring in the groom’s personality, hobbies, or interests.

Wedding Menswear/Groomswear Don’ts:

Don’t discount the pocket square.

Don’t feel like a boutonniere is necessary? A lot of couples opt for their men to wear just a pocket square on their coat for a simple and sophisticated look. Pocket squares are also great because they allow you to incorporate your wedding colors into the men’s attire in a subtle way.

Don’t forget to consider your season and venue.

Whether your wedding’s in the summer on a beach or in the winter in a ballroom, make sure you take that into account when selecting your guys’ attire. Since ours is outside in late April, we decided on a gray suit and got all the guys extra shirts. We want to keep the cool during this extravaganza!

Don’t be afraid to mix things up.

Opting for the mismatched wedding party look is a great way to create a cohesive look without giving clone vibes. One way we’re doing this is by having our fathers wear striped ties and the groomsmen wear solid ties. A small detail goes a long way! (This also applies to your bridesmaids!)

Don’t follow the rules.

With all of the tips and advice out there on wedding planning, we say, Break the rules! If there’s something you and your partner love and want to include that doesn’t fit in with “the typical,” whether it’s ditching the jackets or going barefoot, go for it!
