helping brides create beautiful weddings without breaking the bank

I am so excited to share my first photographer-submitted wedding, shot by the fabulously talented Jen Huang! I love the laid-back loveliness that this wedding encompasses and I think you will too. Instead of me rambling on, I will share some words from the photographer, Jen Huang: When Cynthia and Tom met with me earlier in the year, I could tell that they were an extremely creative couple. Just like I predicted, their wedding was set in a picturesque garden and farm museum in Queens, NY with astoundingly creative details – especially on the part of Tom, who has major groom style! Succulents decorated their simple white tables and a pig was roasted outside of the barn where they held their reception. Cocktails were entertained in the setting sunlight and chickens ambled around the guests. It was a great location, far from it all yet near enough to get on the MTA!

The bride wore a Bridal Garden Novissima dress, hair by Commune Salon and flowers by Sprout Home. The groom wore J.Crew and Paul Smith sneakers with a boutonniere made from old film and a NYC map. Keil Brothers Nursery provided the succulents and Smoking Grill/Bon Soir provided the catering. Wedding bands/rings by DeBeers and Stuart Moore.

What was your budget?

What creative or personal aspects did you include in your wedding?

We designed and planned everything ourselves, so there were a lot of personal touches. One detail was the New York subway map theme that carried over from our invitations to the boutonnieres, to the map “guest book” at the reception, to the table signs…

What was the biggest thing you did to save money?

Casual food and buying all the booze for the bar — a BBQ buffet was much more affordable (and more our style) than a 3-course formal dinner, and we bought all of the liquor at discount stores. Our friends also chipped in a lot— 1 friend baked our wedding cake, another made the boutonnieres, another did my makeup.

What’s the best advice you have for planning your wedding now that you’re on the other side?

Remember that in the end, it’s an important rite of passage but it’s also just a party. Don’t get caught up in too many details that no one will remember, just have fun and focus on the big picture (and try not to skimp on the trinity that makes every guest happy — good music, plenty of food, and an amply stocked bar).

What was your biggest splurge?

Letter-pressed invitations. I’m a graphic designer and all the stationery was very important to me.

What was your favorite detail?

The farm animals. But they came with the space. The ice cream truck was also a big hit.

What is the most memorable moment of your day?

Reading our vows during the ceremony.
Jen Huang, our awesome photographer
Sprout Home (Tassy was amazing and envisioned it all perfectly)
The Smoking Grill (Bon Soir Caterers)
The Bridal Garden
Commune Salon (hair)
{c/c} (my design firm) designed the wedding invitations!
Julie Paul Design (created the boutonnieres)
Matthew Kelsey (our letterpress)
