Hello from Erin! | The Budget Savvy Bride
The Budget Savvy Bride

Hi everyone! My name is Erin and I will be sharing my wedding planning adventure with you as a new member of the BSB crew. So, let’s get to know each other, shall we?

I’m a 29 year old middle school teacher living in Baltimore, MD (originally from Ocean City, MD). My fiancé is Nick, he’s also 29 and is web designer/producer and he also runs his own sports blog. He’s a 6’ 6” brown haired, brown eyed boy, my best friend and the absolute love of my life. We’ve been together for 8 ½ years, he proposed about a month after our 8 year anniversary. I know what you’re thinking – we totally rushed into things!!

How did we meet: I met Nick my senior year of college, we both went to the same college but our classes were on opposite sides of campus so we never ran into each other over the years. Lucky for me, my roommate and he were in the same major and she knew we’d get along because we apparently had the same band t-shirt (any Taking Back Sunday fans out there?)

My roommate was sick of me dragging her to shows at The Ottobar and 9:30 Club, so she gave Nick my AIM screen name so we could get to know eachother. Yes, we met over AOL Instant Messenger – it’s so “You’ve Got Mail.”

Nick contacted me first and we talked online for a month before we ever met or saw a picture of each other! We made plans to go see Brand New and Hot Rod Circuit at the end of October and that would be the first time we officially met. However, just a few days before the concert we randomly met at the mall, where I asked my roommate if the tall guy walking through the Halloween store was Nick – guess what? It was! A few days later we went to the concert together and we’ve been together ever since!

The proposal: Fast forward a little over 8 years and we’re walking our dog, Penny, in the park near my house. I had just gotten Nick a new camera for our anniversary, so we walked to a historical pagoda in the park where you can see the entire city of Baltimore so that Nick could take some photos. I thought nothing of him wanting to go there and was aimlessly walking Penny around in the area. Nick turns around and says “Oh man, my camera battery died.” I offered him mine since it was the same model and I was balancing my camera, dog leash and battery in my hands when Nick came over and said “That’s okay, I just wanted to take one last picture before I asked you to marry me?” and he was down on one knee with a beautiful ring! I was shaking and crying and jumping up and down. All I wanted to do was throw down everything I had in my hands and rip my gloves off! I finally set everything down and he put the ring on, we both cried and hugged and kissed. It was absolutely surreal (as I’m sure all of you brides know!) We tried to set up my camera to take our photo, but had nothing to balance it on. A guy walked up, the only guy we had seen in the park during our walk (since it was a random Thursday and freezing out). He took our picture and told us he could tell when he saw us that we were having a moment and he stayed away to give us our privacy. He said seeing how happy we were – made him cry. Here is the photo he took – excuse my crying eyes!

The funny thing is – Nick’s camera battery really did dieI thought that was all part of his ploy to turn around. He likes to say that was God’s way of telling him that it was the right time. Nick told me later he picked this spot, not only because it is special to us, but one day we’ll bring our kids there and tell them the proposal story. If it was possible, this made me love him even more.

So here are the wedding details, which you’ll hear more about over the next few months:

Wedding date: October 27, 2012

Ceremony Location: St. Mary’s Star of the Sea Catholic Church– Ocean City, MD

Reception Location: The Atrium at Golden Sands Club – Ocean City, MD

Guests: 70 (Maybe less once we start crunching more numbers! We’ve already cut our guest list once!)

Budget: $10-12,000 (it was originally $10,000 and that was pushing it for us, but we are trying to be realistic and know we will probably be closer to $12,000 when all is said and done!)

I am so excited to share and learn from all of you readers!

    What a great story!!

I have to comment bc you are from the city of my most favorite food in the world…. Thrashers French Fries. And you love Brand New AND Hot Rod Circuit (they are from New Haven, CT, the city where I work). :)

I met my future husband at a wedding. My cousin married his cousin and with the help of social networking, we began talking online and then eventually went out on a date.

Best of luck with planning and looking forward to more of your posts.

    • Woo hoo for an OC/Brand New/HRC fan! In my many jobs in OC, I used to work at a pizza place and we sold ketchup to people who bought Thrasher’s fries. Loved it!

Love how you met your fiance, hope your wedding planning is going well! :)
