My Christmas Present from E | The Budget Savvy Bride
The Budget Savvy Bride

For the last few months I have had puppy fever. Every time I see a sweet little canine face I just get so excited… I kept telling E how much I wanted a little guy or girl to bring home with us but he insisted that we need to have a house with a yard before we adopt a puppy. This totally bummed me out because we JUST bought a townhouse and we plan to stay here for around 5 years… which means no puppy for 5 years. Talk about sadness. I suppose E had a change of heart because he told me for Christmas that he will get me a puppy!!! We are hoping to adopt from a local animal shelter to help save the life of a pup instead of going for some fancy breed… although… I am mildly obsessed with Beagles. We took some online quizzes about which dogs matched our lifestyle and beagle ended up on every one. They are not too big for our townhouse, but big enough to go for a run in the park with us. We will most likely take what we can find though because we would like to rescue a pup from a shelter. And since I work from home I can take him or her out on walks during the day (which is a good thing for me, too!)

I find it funny that in the times when most of my friends uterus’s are aching to have a baby that all I want is a pup. Baby steps, people. Baby Steps. I mean come on, how could you say no to this face?

We adopted from Happy Tales at the Factory in Franklin last June. Best dog ever. He’s a dachund/terrier mix. At only 25 lbs, he was perfect for our apartment until we were able to get a house. They do a great job over there. And you know what comes after dogs…BABIES!

Aw. I have a beagle and he is my pride and joy. I adopted him about three years ago when he was 8 weeks old, from a rescue that saved his pregnant mama when she was out wandering the streets.

He’s a handful, but the sweetest thing EVER.

Oh, and it’s true that it’s pretty easy to adopt a beagle instead of get one from a breeder. There are always a lot of beagles available to rescue.

  2. I love beagles! Can’t wait to see pics when you bring he/she home!

  3. omg that is the cutest face!! mr. smith loves beagles too – it was a breed we considered for a while!

  4. oh and try petfinder.com. you can probably find a beagle to adopt – you may have to drive, but i’m sure you can find one. :)

  5. OMG. OMG. OMG. I totally totally totally want a beagle. It’s my dream dog. We have a local beagle rescue up here (Southern Maryland Beagle Rescue) and they often have puppies.
There are a lot of beagles available for rescue because they are frequently used as lab dogs.
I don’t know where Franklin is, but you should go there immediately.

  6. OMG I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything cuter! I share your Beagle obsession. You’re so lucky!

And nothing wrong about your “baby steps” approach to parenting… I was the same. Waiting until you truly feel willing and ready is the good way to do it me thinks! A dog is excellent practice!

How exciting! I’m so happy to hear that you’re going to go the shelter route as well! It’s a very rewarding experience! I know you’ll find the pup that’s meant to be yours! Can’t wait to see pics of him/her!

Awwwwww! Squishy beagle faces! This makes me homesick for my beagle that still lives with my parents. They are super cute, and you never know, you may find one at a shelter; a friend of mine found one at her local shelter.

I’m with you though, I am still young (23) and a TON of my friends are already having kids or wanting them. I’ll take my kittens for now thanks.

My roommate adopted a beagle 2 years ago from Penny Angel Beagle Rescue out of NJ. Do some searching, I’m sure there’s a beagle rescue near you. If you’re having trouble finding one, I’m sure if you called Penny Angel they would be able to hook you up with someone local. Beagle are great (I love her) but they can be not so fun to walk as they are more interested in “hunting” (sniffing around a 3ft radius for 10 min) than they are in running or walking. If you’re looking for more of a walker or running partner, I’d consider something else.

  7. I agree with trying petfinder. They’re great at helping you find animals. You could get a pure bred from a rescue.

  8. awww… how adorable?… i wish i could rescue one for myself but since we live in an apartment it’s kind of hard to take care of one… I am sure you’re going to be a fantastic mom to the pup… many congrats…

Girlfriend I totally feel you! I have been DYING for a puppy for about two years now and my guy finally got me one in October… I could totally care less about the whole motherhood thing, I just wanted my own little puppy. He was the best thing we’ve ever done and he actually has strengthened our relationship and it’s been interesting to see our parenting styles come out. :) GOOD LUCK!!!

  9. a puppy would be such a great gift. the photos are just so cute :) i long for a puppy (corgi or westie) but our apartment does not allow dogs :(

  10. I love it! I have puppy fever too! I’m excited for you :)

I got a beagle pup about a year ago and they are a handful and a half. Ours is exceptional bright but oh so stubborn. Hmmm… like owner like pet. But you really cannot stay mad at them for long with faces like that. Arden (the honey named him, not me!) is very good at the “oh poor me” eyes.

  11. oh he is sooo adorable!

  12. My landlord has a very loveable beagle. I must say though, he HATES to be alone. If anyone leaves, even for 5 minutes, he’ll howl until someone comes home. Sometimes for hours on end. That being said, he’s friendly and playful and a big suck. He just wants love all the time :)

Oh, girl! I have a mild obsession with beagles too… even though I’m in school right now and when I get married, I’ll have a small apartment… so my beagle wait is going to have to be long. Hopefully my future husband will be a softie too.

Just like Britt said – beagles are HOWLERS. I had two beagle puppies that we adopted, both from shelters, one passed away and the other we had to give to a friend when we divorced but they barked, howled, and they can go on, and on, and on, and on, I’m sure you get the picture – they are great dogs just be prepared for the noise. I’ve heard that is because they are hound dogs! good luck and take plenty of pictures! you will for sure find one at a shelter. Check petfinder!

Very cute, and I definitely think you should and could rescue a purebred! I am partial to Boston Terriers, though ;)

  14. yay!! congrats! can’t wait to see real pics of your puppy!

aw, beagles! i’ve loved every minute with my nearly 3.5 year old beagle. i got her through a local beagle rescue group and she’s just amazing. so lazy, yet crazy and loving. also, the perfect size for cuddling. it’s worth the work to adopt a pup instead of going the breeder route, for sure!

  15. Those puppies are so adorable! So glad you’re getting a shelter dog, that’s so nice.

I have the same puppy cravings as you! I spend way too much time on Petfinder.com. They are all shelter dogs, and you can search by breed, sex, location, size, etc.

Good luck finding your perfect pooch!

  16. I agree that if you keep looking, you can probably find a beagle who needs to be rescued. You would be amazed how many dogs (of ALL breeds) need a home right now. I’m glad you are set on rescuing!

  17. CUTEST dog ever! Ah! :D
