So, I’m going to get into a subject that I’m sure many brides-to-be are already thinking about — getting in shape for your wedding day. I’m no expert on the subject, but I know what works for me so I thought I would share it. I’m sure that we all could share some great tips and tricks that work for us because we all know this isn’t easy and there is no one size fits all way of doing it.

In 2005, I flew out to San Diego for my (half) sister’s wedding. It was absolutely beautiful, what wasn’t beautiful was the way I looked in the photos. It was a total wake up call. My other sister was getting married the following year, so I decided it was time to get serious and lose some weight in a healthy way. I started my weight loss journey the first time around in January 2006. I counted calories via CalorieKing and started doing the Couch to 5K program. I paid $19 to join CalorieKing and the Couch to 5K program was free – pretty budget savvy! I ran my first 5K in May and have been running ever since (to date, I’ve raced: 23 5Ks, 1 8K, 1 10 miler, 3 Half Marathon, 1 Marathon Relay, and 1 Marathon). I’m not fast, but I enjoy running because it makes me feel powerful and can pretty much be done anywhere and year round. This was my main form of exercise through my initial weight loss.

Between logging my food and exercising, I lost 57 lbs! By the time my sister got married in October 2006, I was down to 120. I maintained that weight for a long time. Surprisingly, training for a marathon is what caused me to gain a significant amount of weight back. So, here I am now, 4 months from my wedding embarking on this journey again!

In November, before I was even engaged, I started to get more serious about watching what I ate. I have lost about 15 lbs since then. I would like to lose another 15 before the wedding. I know that weight loss and getting healthy and fit is not all about the scale, so I will be paying more attention to the way my clothes fit and the way I feel than the number on the scale – however, we all know that the number can often be the main way we gauge our successes.

Now, I’m realizing there are only 4 months until my wedding and it’s time to get really serious. I know I might not meet my goal, but I am going to try! To do this, I came up with Operation: Wedding. Here are my goals:

    • I’m going to weigh myself daily and log it. I know the number can vary based on water retention, TOM, etc.
    • I’m going to log my food through CalorieKing (there are TONS of different options out there, for free and that have a membership fee, find what works for you).
    • I’m going to try to work out everyday. Whether it’s a long walk with the dog in the park, a kettlebell DVD, a workout from a magazine – my goal is to do something everyday.
    • I’m going to drink lots of water, I’m already pretty good about this, but I do tend to drink less water in the summer when my days aren’t as scheduled as during the school year.
    • I’m going to be doing a peroxide rinse – this really has nothing to do with weight loss, I found something on Pinterest that said rinsing daily (then weekly) with peroxide can whiten your teeth and is healthy for your gums. I figured this was a pretty budget savvy way to whiten my teeth and who doesn’t want whiter teeth and healthy gums?
    • I’m going to reflect on each day. What was good about yesterday? What was bad about yesterday? Where was I successful? Where was I challenged? I want to use that information to move forward with my plan and be as successful as possible.

To help remind myself of my goals, I made a little sign to put in my bathroom – I put it in there because I am in there everyday, and it’s also where I weigh myself and do my rinse, so those 2 things should be pretty easy to do since the reminder is right there as well as the tools to do them. I know this might not work for everyone, but I am a visual person – so I think this will be good for me. So there you have it - Operation: Wedding!

  1. I am in the process of trying to figure out how to lose the weight I have put back on in the past 4 years before my wedding in June. I love running so I am going to start training for a half again, but what kills me is the calorie counting. I am so discouraged by it and find it completely frustrating. But its what really works! Great job on all of your weight loss!

    • Calorie counting can be a total pain. I like Calorie King because you can save custom meals, so things I eat a lot (like a certain meal from Panera or something), I can save it to save time when logging my food. I’ve found I also just have a much better idea of how many calories are in something so I can add it up in my head without actually logging when I don’t have time or don’t feel like doing it!
