The Budget Savvy Bride

Here’s the answer to the questions I got yesterday, just in case you’re interested!

Did you find that you found out things or opinions about your FH that surprised you a bit? Or discovered issues that you didn’t think would be issues?

I did, actually. I was surprised that originally he wanted to wear a tuxedo- he's not a very formal person and rarely dresses up, so that surprised me! I've convinced him that a suit is the way to go, though! Ahhh, womanly power! ;)

Also, I've been surprised by how willing to help he's been- when I told him I didn't want to make big decisions (like our venue) without him, he was more than willing to come along and check things out with me. He's a keeper. For sure. :)

In honor of National Stay at Home Week, what is your favorite TV show?

Man, that's a toughie! I have to admit I watch WAY too much TV. And E and I just got DVR- best thing EVER. I really love The Office- we've been watching it together since we first met, so it's close to my heart. For a while our relationship paralleled Jim and Pam's so it’s special seeing them together now- cheesy I know!! I also love LOST, Grey’s Anatomy, and have a deep nostalgia for SATC and Gilmore Girls. :)

What is your favorite (G-rated) thing to do with your fiance?

We don't go out very much, which is totally fine by me. I love when E cooks us dinner. He went to culinary school for a while and is an EXCELLENT cook. (He's part of the reason I've gained so much weight, I think!) A nice dinner at home, then curling up on the couch together and watching a movie- it doesn't get much better for me! I would seriously be content doing just that every night- (which we pretty much do… haha)

What has been the biggest wedding planning challenge?

Well, our budget is a problem, because we don't really have a definite dollar amount. We'll basically spend what we've saved and whatever we can save as we go along. It's really hard to budget when we don't have a chunk of change to pull from. Also, our guest list. Definitely don't have a definite list made yet. Yes, I am a bad bride-to-be. :(

What has been the most fun part of wedding planning?

I honestly can't say any of it has been fun yet. Is that terrible? I take that back, when we've made our big decisions, that feeling of accomplishment and relief that E & I have shared has been fun. But honestly, I'm terribly indecisive so having to make all these decisions is really taxing on me- no lie!

I read you say you are a graphic designer, but what kind of company do you work for? Do you love your job or would you rather be doing something else?

I've gotten quite a few emails asking this question, so it's time I come clean. I am a graphic designer for a company that specializes in wedding publications. Yes, yes- I know. My company produces local wedding magazines for several different cities in the Southeast and a specialty publication in Charlotte, NC called Simply the Best. As you might have figured out, I work for The Pink Book, which is a planning resource for brides across the country. I am Pink Lady Jessica on The Pink Book blog where I blog once-ish a week about random wedding-related topics. When I went to the Martha Show last week, I got to go for work (i.e.-for free) which is the only reason I was able to go. As you know I am budget-conscious and I don't have the money to just fly up to NYC on a whim!

I honestly can say that I do really enjoy my job. I never imagined that I would get such a fun job as my first job out of college. I'd always hoped to work for a magazine so it really was the perfect job for me. Then I got engaged and so now of course my WHOLE life revolves around weddings- you can imagine how overwhelming it can be! I don't know that I'd rather be doing anything else though at the moment- it's so great for this stage in my life and really helps in my planning process. I'm the target market for most of our publications so it's pretty perfect! The only thing that is kind of a downfall is I feel enormous pressure to have an amazingly lavish wedding worthy of a bridal magazine, when in reality it’s not going to be like that. I’m on a budget- just because I work for a wedding magazine doesn’t mean I have unlimited resources! *end rant*

What made you decide to start a wedding blog?

I started my blog for a couple of reasons… I wanted somewhere I could keep all of my ideas in one place. It's much easier (and cleaner than ripping out magazine pages and scattering them all over our apartment!) I'd also been blogging for months for my job and was excited to have a reason to start a blog where I could talk about myself, my planning, and my experiences. Another reason I kinda/maybe started it was so I could apply to be a Weddingbee blogger. Sadly, I received my rejection email on Sunday.
That may or may not be the reason I haven't been so psyched about blogging this week… My apologies to all of my readers!

What is your favourite cheese?

This is so funny- my dad is from Wisconsin and I blame him for my affinity for cheese! Um… would it be terrible if I said Velveeta? I know that's not even real cheese- it doesn't even have to be refrigerated! But dang I love me some Rotel dip… yummmmy. If I had to choose a cheese of the real, non-processed variety, I'd have to go with swiss!

Tell us 3 of your guilty pleasures!!

1. Trashy reality TV. Think Rock of Love, I Love New York, I Love Money- anything terrible on VH1 or E!

2. A lot of my musical loves would be considered guilty pleasures by most. Any 80's Music and Pop from the 90's. In case you didn't realize, I'm a big Journey fan- my cat is named Steve Perry. I'm also known to rock out to some old school N*Sync and Britney Spears from time to time… Oh and, of course, ABBA. Showtunes? Yep, I love them.

3. Blogs, blogs and more blogs!! I am currently subscribed to 201 blogs on my Google Reader, and I add new ones daily it seems. I guess I am kind of a nosy person, I love reading about what other people are up to. I just really enjoy the blogging community and writing is a release for me as well. As you can see I do a LOT of it!

I am fairly new to blogging and really enjoy yours, besides the wedding and photography blogs what are your top three favorite blogs?

Most of my 201 blogs are wedding-related! But there are some others that I love. Here’s my top 3!

1. Perez Hilton! That guy cracks me up and I love to keep up with the latest celeb scandals. It was SO exciting to see him at the Martha show last week!

2. Fashion Under $100. This girl is fabulous- she takes looks that we've all seen celebs rockin' on the red carpet or on the streets and she finds similar pieces to build knock-off ensembles for less than $100. Awesome for me, since I'm on a budget in every aspect of my life.

3. Design*Sponge. So inspirational. Décor, art, design- all the things I love in one place! I especially love the before/after furniture makeover pieces!

How is Bootcamp? Do you think it’s worth the effort? Is it fun?

I'm only on day 3 of Boot Camp. Today was an off day- THANK GOD. I am still so sore from yesterday's workout that it hurts to breathe- no lie. I still have to do ‘homework’ tonight- some stretches, lunges, pushups, situps, etc. I am 100% sure that it is worth the effort and all of my hard work is going to pay off. Fun? Ha- not so much. It's pretty intense- brutal, even. I know as time goes on I will get stronger and things will get easier, and that is what I'm looking forward to!

What is your favorite ice cream?

This one's easy!! Definitely, DEFINITELY mint chocolate chip. The green kind. MUST be the green kind. Mint chocolate oreo- even better. Not that I can have any of that for a while…

Have you decided where you are going on your Honeymoon?

E & I are still pondering over the honeymoon situation. As of right now, we have not made any decisions! Like I said, budget is the problem. Currently, we're scraping to even afford the wedding so we might postpone our honeymoon or maybe just take a short trip (mini-moon) to cut cost.

So there you have it! My first reader Q&A. That was fun. :)

Jessica is the creator of The Budget Savvy Bride; she launched the site in May of 2008, shortly after becoming engaged. 1. Love The Office and rotel dip!

Keep trying on Weddingbee. I heard some people try 3 times before being accepted!

  2. So sorry about Weddingbee… I know it was one of your dreams… But you know, we love you anyway and there’s plenty of life outside the hive!!!

We totally share the same TV list. If you add in Ugly Betty, that could have been written by me! It was also fun to learn about your job…

JUST this past weekend, I too convinced him that a suit was a way to go… it took a lot of pressure and months of haggling… it’s not for sure, but with the venue we picked, i think a suit is better – and re-wearable. ALSO, My FH is so helpful at times, i wonder whats wrong with him… lol

    I loved your Q&A.

As for weddingbee – don’t they actually encourage you to apply more than once? Keep on trying!!! Either way you have faithful readers ..!!!
