Wedding Invitation Design Trends

One of the most significant wedding-planning activities that every couple must accomplish is choosing their wedding invitations

Wedding invitations do more than simply inform guests the wish to celebrate one of the most special days of the couple’s life with them — they also provide the bride and groom with an opportunity to display the concept and style that they’ve chosen for the big day. Here’s some things to think about as you create RSVP cards and stationery:

1. Safety First!

In response to the COVID-19 outbreak, couples and wedding planners are investing more than ever in the right wedding stationery to effectively communicate with their guests. The last thing you want at your wedding is for guests to fall ill following the event. Being safety first means including additional information on your stationery suite such as requirements for proof of vaccination, face masks recommendations, or additional protocols that are expected either in or outside of the venue.

As couples continue to carefully celebrate their special day, wedding invitation templates that emphasize health and safety concerns are expected to be a popular trend in 2022.

2. Something Old

What’s old is new again — at least when it comes to wedding invitations. As nostalgia has been more popular than ever in recent months, we’re witnessing a return in light neutral colors in invitation design like champagnes, hazy blues, and soft pinks.

Although every celebration of love is timeless, today’s couples can also evoke the jazz age and give their wedding invitations that Art Deco glamor by incorporating rich, metallic hues, geometric shapes and frames.

3. QR Codes

As technology advances, so do wedding invitation designs. Forget wax seals and calligraphy fonts; QR Codes are now essential features of the wedding stationery of every modern couple.

QR codes allow engaged couples to do all sorts of things: from sharing their journey through photos, videos, or any other digital assets that illustrate the storyline of their relationship; to showing the exact location of the venue, and even enabling guests to RSVP online. Just remember that not everyone is that tech-savvy, so providing alternative ways of sharing information should also be a consideration.

4. Minimalism

In light of the 2020 pandemic, there has been a trend toward simplicity, particularly in wedding templates. Given the challenges of planning or postponing a wedding right now, couples are now opting for basic minimalist wedding designs to help communicate essential information clearly.

While minimalist wedding designs are by nature nothing new,we’re seeing neutral hues, as well as colorful, monochromatic minimalism dominate in 2022.

5. Digital and Eco-Friendly Designs

Between climate change and environmental disasters, more couples are consciously planning their big celebration with the impact on the environment in mind. Given the amount of rubbish and leftovers that weddings can potentially generate, eco-friendly wedding invitations will be a top trend for the years ahead.

Although there are a number of options for printing your wedding invitations on recycled paper and plant-based paper, couples can also opt for paperless wedding stationery, such as sending out digital wedding invitations or doing a combination of the two (see trend 3 for more).

Wedding Invitation Colors

Although weddings are often white, the complementing colors help set the tone for the celebration. The wedding invitation colors couples pick must be consistent with their wedding theme and most importantly, they should capture and evoke the mood they want for their big day.

Pantone Color of the Year: Very Peri

At the end of 2021, Pantone revealed the new Color of the Year for 2022: Very Peri. The hue is a dreamy periwinkle blue with vibrant violet-red undertones, which emanates a spritely, joyous attitude and dynamic presence. Surely that’s exactly what couples want to communicate to their guests through their wedding invitations!

This color is ideal for any style of celebration, whether it is a conventional wedding, an outdoor garden party, or an event held in a sophisticated location. The possibilities are endless, and we’re obsessed with Very Peri this year, especially when paired with extravagant flowers and natural shapes.

Natural Hues

We also anticipate that this year, both soft, natural tones and more vivid nature-inspired colors will gain popularity among couples designing their wedding invitations.

Perhaps it’s because these warm, neutral colors evoke the same sense of serenity and tranquility that many of us feel when we connect with nature, which is something we’re craving after the lockdown experience. Pair natural hues with soft organic shapes for the best result.

Bright and Fun

Although bright colors are not the first shades that come to mind when thinking of a traditional wedding, a tropical color palette can help lift the energy of your big day..

Orange and yellow are cheery colors that are sure to make guests happy, while using salmon pink and clover green can create just the right amount of contrast to keep this gorgeous palette grounded and earthy. If you’re going to opt for a bright and fun color palette, ensure the font is clear and easy to read, and provide directions to guests about what it means for the dress code

Wedding Invitation Fonts

Aside from the wedding invitation design, choosing a wedding font may help couples to establish the tone of their wedding by giving guests an idea of what to expect. If the font is perfect it can provide an indication of how they should dress for the occasion, how formal the event will be in structure, and even how they will feel when they arrive. Here are some of the font and typography trends that are popular in wedding design:

Retro Nostalgic

Much like the vintage-inspired wedding templates that are popping up on the wedding circuit, retro typography is also a big one for 2022. The retro revival has blossomed in the previous year, bringing with it plenty of new trends, techniques, and designs.

From pop art to mid-century modern fonts, couples now have a lot of freedom to add fun, alternative typography styles to their wedding invitations using these familiar and nostalgic fonts.

Bold and Loud

If there was one word to sum up this wedding typography trend, it would be dramatic.

Soon-to-be married couples want to leave a big impression on their guests, so it’s no surprise that they’re turning to loud typography to make a statement on their big day. Just remember it’s all about hierarchy and balance; consider what elements you want to feature in a bold type, whether it’s the date, names or the theme.

Traditional Cursive and Handwriting

Classic, cursive and calligraphy fonts are the most popular type of fonts used for wedding invitations, and while we’re heralding the new trends, 2022 will be no exception.

This typography is perfect for displaying the names of the engaged couple, as well as general information, and can make wedding invitations look and feel romantic, elegant and timeless.

Closing thoughts

Following a couple of years of lockdowns and canceled plans, couples are looking forward to 2022 with newfound optimism and joy.

While certain wedding trends remain timeless, and others disappear from year to year, embracing sustainability and safety will continue to be essential aspects in many wedding plans throughout the next 12 months and beyond.
