Beach Wedding with DIY Details

I love me a sweet and low-key beach wedding, and that's exactly what Kevin and Katelynn achieved on a budget less than $5K! I love how they sourced supplies for their big day from places like Publix and Wal-Mart. I also love the signs they made out pallets for their wedding. What a cute rustic touch! Happy Wednesday! xoxo, Jessica

How many guests did you have?

We had approximately 80 guests.

What creative or personal aspects did you include in your wedding?

Even though it was a beach wedding, we brought in the rustic feel and made it feel a little more country/rustic. The palm trees were covered in lights, which gave it a relaxing feel sitting by beach listening to the waves crash.

Did you do any DIY projects or create any handmade items for your weddings?

We made all of the bouquets and boutonnieres, all of the signs were made out of pallets and painted. I built the cake stand from an old cut down tree, each table had little round tree pieces with a M burned into them. All centerpieces were made with rustic picture frames, my father built and baby’s breath flowers. We built our arbor out of two old doors and some scrap wood.

What was the biggest thing you did to save money?

The biggest thing that I did to save money was finding my location. The location was beautiful and best of all free. The next biggest way that I saved was ordering my cake and cupcakes from Publix. The last biggest way that I saved was on my flowers, instead of having a florist create all of the items that I needed, we ordered buckets of flowers for a cheaper price and still had some left over after everything.

What’s the best advice you have for planning your wedding now that you’re on the other side?

My advice for anyone planning a wedding is don’t be afraid to ask for help. I was scared to ask anyone for help or ask what I needed to do in planning my wedding by myself. Thankfully a parent of one of my students knew I needed help and she stepped up and took over and helped me get organized. Don’t think that you have to have the best of everything, just because it cost a lot doesn’t mean it’s going to be the best. I wanted to go to a big bakery and get a huge cake, I didn’t want to pay the price for it tho; instead, I went to Publix and everyone loved the cake and the cupcakes and I barely spent any money at all.

What was your biggest splurge?

My biggest splurge was on pictures, but I wanted the best. I didn’t want to get someone that wouldn’t capture every little item at my wedding, I wanted someone that was going to capture everything from beginning to end.

What was your favorite detail?

Every detail at my wedding was my favorite. I loved it all, because it was all made by myself or people that I love. My dad helped make all of the signs out of pallet wood for us to paint and decorate. I would have to say my all time favorite detail tho, would have to be the old window from an old farm house that my parents bought and had our name and wedding date put on it. The old window really added that extra special touch to my wedding.

What is the most memorable moment of your day?

The most memorable moment of my wedding day, was when the storm stopped. It started raining like it does all the time in Florida, then it turned into a storm. Everyone began praying for it to let it just long enough for us to get married on the beach and then we would have the reception inside, I just wanted to walk down the aisle on the beach. The wedding was supposed to start at 5:30 p.m. and at 5:00 p.m. the thunder stopped and the rain completely quit. That was one of the happiest moments that day! I was ready to walk down that aisle to my happily ever after.
