How did you meet?

We first met as classmates at college in one of our chemical engineering courses. It wasn’t until our senior year engineering field trip that we got to know each other a little bit, and after the trip, Don asked me if I had wanted to go out sometime. Being my shy self, I countered his question with “sure, I’ll facebook you my number” to which he responded, “I have my phone now, I can just grab your number here”. I nervously gave him my number and we eventually met up for a first date. We went to a small dinner spot in Laramie and then hit up the arcade afterward for some friendly competition. Super fun! At the end of the night, Don asked me if I would like to go on another date to which I nervously said I thought we would be better as friends. END OF STORY.

EXCEPT….I had a great time with Don that night and really enjoyed his company. With the help of some friends, I realized that I was being too quick to say no to a new relationship and needed to come out of my shell. I later told Don that I would be open to hanging out more and learning more about each other.

The rest is history! In getting to know Don I found my best friend, a loving partner, and my soul mate. He is one of the smartest, most caring, funny, selfless people I know and I am so so grateful that I reconsidered our second date.

What is your proposal story?

The time had come!

On the big night, Aliyah knew I was acting differently but didn’t know why. I had a friend of hers take her out for “girls night” and quickly got to work decorating the apartment with the help of my mom. Once it was set, it was a waiting game. I planned her parents to fly out from Texas and they arrived at the perfect time and hid in the parking lot. I got a heads up when she was on her way back. After the longest 15 minute drive ever, she finally arrived and I popped the question. With tears, she said “yes!”. I asked, “who should we tell first?” She said her parents and I said: “let’s not call them lets go tell them!”. We went down and everyone was there waiting. It was perfect. A perfect night, the start of a great vacation with her parents in the mountains, and the beginning of forever together.

Tell us about your wedding vision.

We wanted a romantic, airy feel to our wedding. Lots of greenery more than flowers and warm colors like burgundy and forest green. Bridesmaids dresses were burgundy (but more red than purple) with the groomsmen accenting the same color. Our venue supported views of both the city of Denver as well as the mountains – both urban and mountain feel!

Tell us about your attire choices.

I wore an A-line, ivory gown with a lace bodice and flowy skirt. I had a silver accent belt that looked like delicate leaves with pearls and lace flats to match. Bridesmaids wore floor-length dresses, all of the same color, but a different style dress for each person.

As for the Groom and Groomsmen. I, the groom, wanted to purchase my own suit and after quite a bit of research and fittings, SuitSupply was the perfect fit for me. It had a great balance of being custom and unique while also being budget-friendly for an entire three-piece suit. The experience of choosing a suit and getting my suit was great. The Groom was in dark grey and the Groomsmen in a lighter dark grey. Groomsmen wore ties, whereas the Groom wore a bowtie. To theme, the colors of the ties were burgundy.

What was most important to you two? Was there anything you chose to splurge on or skip?

The most important thing to us while planning was finding a perfect venue. Something that made our day feel special but also supported a good time and a budget!

We splurged on the photographer because photos last forever!! We skipped out on a photo booth at the wedding because our photographer was awesome and we would have rather had those pictures.

What were your favorite parts of the day?

To both of us, the favorite part of the day was the first look we did together. Getting to see each other before the big event in a more intimate environment was perfect for us and put us both at ease.

Don will also say his favorite moment was when it was said that we were man and wife. I got so excited that I squeezed his hands tight, shook his hands in anticipation, and got the biggest smile on my face.

Tell us about your wedding flowers.

We went with Flintwood Floral who specializes in fake flowers that look and feel real! The fake flowers help reduce water waste and were a more environmentally viable option to traditional flowers, which we loved. Our flowers were mostly big leafy greenery with accents of burgundy, white, and cream flowers. We went with a heavier greenery feel rather than more flowers.

Tell us about your wedding cake.

In partnership with Wedgewood Weddings, The Dessert Stand made our Cake. They had us in for a tasting and were were able to choose three different flavors of cake, one for each tier of the cake. We chose Italian Wedding Cake, Spiced Caramel Apple, and Lemon Blueberry.

What did you do for favors?

We gave out burgundy and white beer koozies with our names and date of the wedding with the caption, “Let the Adventure Begin”.

Please describe any DIY, handmade, or personal details.

I made the seating chart myself – I got a large mirror that I love and used stickers to list out the tables and names.

For our guest book, we also got a large canvas of the projected night sky constellations on the night of our wedding – something personal and unique to our day.

Did you include any family heirlooms or special traditions?

The groom is Danish and as such, we had three special Danish Traditions.

  • The Groom’s mother prepared a song that was sung out loud among everyone in attendance.
  • At one point, the tips of the Groom’s socks were cut off. This is meant to keep the groom “grounded”.
  • Should the attendees stomp their feet the bride and groom had to kiss underneath the dinner table. Should the attendees clank their glasses the bride and groom had to stand on their chairs and kiss.

Do you have any advice for couples planning their weddings now?

Splurge on yourself not the people at your wedding!
