noom

Every bride wants to look and feel her best on her big day, no one can deny that.

Unfortunately, some women feel undeserved pressure to lose weight for the wedding day and decide to take some pretty drastic measures to achieve a certain bridal body.

If I’m being honest, I was one of those brides.

Taking on a strict fitness and diet routine leading up to the big day can put your body (and your mind) under more stress than you need.

Instead of looking at your wedding day as the weight-loss finish line that you have to race across, consider starting NOW and creating a more healthy and balanced life.

In this post I’m going to share all about a tool I found that I believe to be hugely helpful in making positive changes in your health, wellness, and happiness!

My lifelong weight struggle

The truth is, my weight has fluctuated drastically over the years through cycles of highs and lows. When I got engaged, I was at a high point (where the scale was concerned, anyway.)

The lengths I went to reduce my size and weight in prep for my big day bordered on disordered and, in hindsight, were somewhat dangerous. I tried everything from enrolling in a bootcamp program and working out 7 days a week to drastically reducing my food intake.

As the big day drew near, I even went so far as to complete 10 full days of the Master Cleanse… aka I did not eat solid food for 10 whole days. And our wedding couple’s shower happened to fit right in the center of this grand scheme. I look back on it now and feel sad that I felt like I had to go to those lengths in order to feel good about myself.

What’s worse, is even after all I put myself through, I still didn’t feel my best. I picked apart every piece of my body in my wedding dress, and to this day I still don’t love looking at those photos.

From there, my abusive relationship with food continued as I went on to gain even more weight before reaching my peak in 2013. I remember hitting 180 lbs on my 5’3 frame and realizing that something had to change, and for good.

The key to finally healing the relationship with food and body image

I’d been on a life long rollercoaster of emotions relating to food and body image. Achieving a true balance seemed elusive and mythical, but with time, support, and some helpful tools I’ve learned that it doesn’t have to be.

I’m happy to report that I’m 50 lbs down from my highest weight. It took me over 5 years to reach my goal: a number I hadn’t seen on the scale since my freshman year of high school.

I was convinced that I was pre-destined to always be on the chubby side, thanks to my biology and my very nature of being. That I wouldn’t be able to escape the struggles my parents had with their weight and was bound to experience the same for my entire life.

Have you ever struggled with thoughts like those?

It can be hard to overcome those negative messages in our minds, but I’ve found a tool that is super handy and effective that I want to share with you. I’ve found that the lessons I’ve learned from utilizing this resource have impacted my life in many ways, including (but certainly not limited to) my waistline!

What is this resource I speak of? It’s called Noom, and it’s actually an app for your smartphone!

A Balanced Approach to Life, Wedding Planning and Weight loss

noom - weight loss review for brides

What is Noom?

Noom is a wellness app for your smartphone! Noom was designed and created by behavioral psychologists, and their approach is balanced and unique. Their program focuses on helping you make small, sustainable lifestyle changes over time rather than strict, crash diets or cutting out specific food groups.

How does Noom work?

The Noom app leverages a few crucial tools you have at your disposal at all times. Those tools are your smartphone and your mind. Their handy app helps you create lasting changes to your behavior. These lifestyle changes set you up for more successful and sustainable weight loss.

If you’re like me, you may have tried many other programs. Some work for a while, but eventually, when you revert back to your “normal” you gain it all back (and then some, usually!) Noom teaches you how to identify and change the habits that have been holding you back.

Noom knows that weight loss is tough – both to start and to maintain – so their daily lessons help you learn to literally train your brain using proven psychology methods for your own personal development. It’s unlike any program I’ve seen before, and honestly? I wish I’d learned about it sooner.

The Noom Program consists of:

  • Daily interactive articles that aim to educate, inspire, and motivate you along your health journey
  • Weekly, one-on-one goal setting and support from your goal specialist
  • 24/7 access to a support group of fellow Noomers, as well as a Group Coach who cheers you on throughout the weekly challenges and daily lessons
  • Guidance in defining your Ultimate Why– the reason why you want to lose weight or make changes in your health
  • Accountability if you start to veer off track. Your Goal Specialist will check in on you if you ghost them or go MIA on your daily Noom tasks.
  • Thorough Food Database with over 426,000 items, so you can easily log foods you find in stores, restaurants, etc.
  • Digital high-fives and encouragement along the way for building your healthy habits — such as streaks in logging your food, exceeding your step goal, etc.

What’s different about Noom?

Compared to other weight loss programs, what makes Noom different?

Noom’s Goal Specialists are trained in cognitive behavior therapy. CBT aids in creating and encouraging actionable changes. Your Goal Specialist will help address patterns of thinking or behaviors that are no longer serving you and help you to change them!

They adopt a model of a behavior chain that can be used to identify the way you relate to and react around food. (Trigger, Thought, Action, Consequence.) This piece was a huge eye-opener to me and has helped me to become more mindful of my own patterns of behavior. When you have a better understanding of your personal struggles, it’s easier to see areas to make positive changes!

Between the support you receive from your Goal Specialist and the information you receive via the app, you get accountability, education, motivation, AND inspiration. With Noom, you are constantly being challenged to make small positive changes that you build upon over time, making them much more sustainable long-term.

(Side note — What Noom provides their users is what we strive to provide couples with here at The Budget Savvy Bride: the information and education to empower you to make good choices with your wedding planning. The same can be said for Noom when it comes to wellness, which is one big reason why I feel comfortable sharing it as a resource.)

The Noom Approach to choosing foods

Noom prompts you to track your progress by logging your food and weight each day. Their easy to use Red-Yellow-Green labeling system helps you to see visually the foods that are best to eat en-mass vs in more limited portions. Basically, you can go HAM on veggies and you will be more mindful of foods that fall into the Red and Yellow labels.

With Noom, foods aren’t labeled as “good” or “bad” – you don’t have to feel guilty for indulging in your favorite things. They help you make plans and set parameters based upon your goals so that you *can* treat-yo-self without the guilt!

I love that the app focuses on finding a balance and building healthy habits over time. It’s not a crash diet. It doesn’t shame you for splurging. It helps you develop your own guiding system to help you make informed decisions regarding your food, exercise and health habits.

Noom also helps you remember to celebrate the victories along the way, and thanks to Noom, I’m more mindful of “non-scale” victories, like feeling more confident and seeing more muscle definition in my biceps. Plus along the way I’ve noticed myself having more energy.

These small “non-scale” victories have been incredibly important in my process, as I was already in a pretty great place with my health journey when I decided to give Noom a try. Because I didn’t have a big goal of weight to lose, finding other ways to measure my success have helped contribute to a happier, healthier life.

Find your own healthy balance

Attempting to find balance in our lives is a worthy pursuit, especially during a time that can be stressful such as wedding planning.

Whether you’re looking to slim down, tone up, or just get your mind centered around health and wellness, Noom is definitely worth checking out. Especially since it only costs $1 to do a two-week trial!

Noom will help you to add healthy habits into your day in an intentional way, fitting them into your daily routine and adding to them over time. It’s convenient, truly helpful, and done in a way that feels sustainable in the long term.

The choice is yours. Choose yourself.

Though I do not owe the majority of my weight loss to Noom specifically, I certainly think that it would have been an incredible tool to get myself started on the right path. Maybe it wouldn’t have taken me so long to reach my “happy place” and to start truly living the life I wanted.

You could spend years doing things the hard way like I did. It took me lots of deep, personal work to change the outdated ways of thinking and challenge all the pre-conceived notions I had in my head about food and weight. I spent years on trial-and-error, of listening to my body, and of developing a more intuitive sense of eating to get myself to a point where I finally felt happy and confident in my skin. Or you could arm yourself with a powerful tool like Noom to help you get the results you desire, and make the positive mental and health changes you deserve.
