Okay. Enough is enough; I need to commit.

When I graduated from college last year, I was in the best shape I had been in during my college career. I was working out nearly every day. I was eating well. I was on a high- it was great to be at a “happy weight.” Then I graduated. I lost my free gym membership to an awesome, state-of-the-art college gym facility. TVs in front of the elipticals, people! It's so mindless. Grey's anatomy= 1 hr. That equals a solid hour of me sweating my booty off. It's GENIUS. I'm not a distance runner. I don't do running outside. I start off too fast and burn out easily. Anyway, I digress. I lost my free gym membership, therefore I stopped working out. I was just waiting tables and bumming around. It was glorious. At least being on my feet all day gave me a bit of physical activity- I maintained my weight for the most part. Then the unthinkable happened… I got a job. A real, GROWNUP job. I wasn't expecting it to happen, it just kind of snuck up on me. I was planning on chilling out ALL summer and then looking for a job in the fall. Unfortunately “adulthood” and this thing they call the “real world” came into my life a little sooner than I expected.

So I started my 9-5 gig. A regular paycheck is nice… in fact, it was FABULOUS. I felt like I had more money than I knew what to do with. I was loving it. I got to go out to eat more, I got to buy more clothes. But as time went on… I noticed I was buying bigger clothes. Larger sizes. Flow-ier tops. Bustier bras. I was spending less time doing physical activity. The job of a graphic designer is pretty sedentary. With my new 9-5 gig came some 20-25 lbs over the course of a year. And here I am, one year later, in skin that I don't recognize anymore.
Here's some visual proof for you. Let's all have a good laugh (or in my case, cry) over these photos of me. On the left, you have me on the day of my graduation. May 11, 2007. I was a size 6… 130 lbs. (And I'm 5'3) That's the same weight I was when I graduated high school. On the right, you have me a little over a month ago, on the day of our friends' wedding. May 17, 2008. I am now a size 12. 155+ lbs. And somehow managed to SQUEEZE myself into the exact same dress. Don't ask me how I did it…

I need to commit, health and fitness, before

Okay I'll tell you. A year ago, I was wearing a padded strapless bra in that dress. Fast forward to 2008, and I'm wearing NO BRA and my boobs were still busting out of the dress so I had to wear the sweater. GROSS. Seriously. Not to mention that my waist and hips have gotten larger so the midsection of the dress has all risen up into the boob area…. making my dress look like a maternity dress. Lovely.

So ladies and gents, something must be done! I have joined a gym and I need to make a commitment to go! I need to commit to eating better. If anyone out there has any words of inspiration or motivation I would be sincerely thankful. Or if anyone has tried a system that has worked for you, please let me know. I just don't want to look like a pregnant lady in my wedding dress. πŸ™ Tomorrow is T-minus 9 months to the wedding, I think it's a good time to get started…

  • There are a lot of tools online to help with this sort of thing. If you don’t want to do a commercial program like Weight Watchers, there’s something called Spark People (I think?) or Fit Day that gives you a guide to track your caloric intake and expenditures.

    I’ve lost over 100 pounds with WW, and have kept it off. But that’s me. Everyone’s different! Definitely get back to an exercise schedule, take a look at your eating habits, and treat yourself with kindness (i.e. stop with any mean things you might say or think about yourself).

  • I have lost 50 pounds and am in a quest to loss 45 more before my wedding next April. What I have found that has worked for me is I drink lots of water everyday. If you do not like water, try adding one of those water sugar free 0 calories flavor packets. They are usually $1.00 for 12 at Walgreens or Walmart. I workout 3-4 days a week and I vary my workouts so that I do not get bored. The best advise is to start slow, if it takes you just walking on the treadmill for 30 minutes to start. Starting the first key. Don’t feel bad if you treat yourself every now and then. Removing everything can make want it more.

    am i am horrible person because i laughed when you described pouring yourself into your dress and your boobs popping out? i hope not. because really, i’m not horrible. though i don’t have any tips per say (because i am the worst with fitness and such – all talk no action i am) i think making a commitment to get fit is the first step and also you are working towards a very tangible and specific date…so i think you’ll be motivated. good luck! oh! some words of wisdom:

  • Don’t be sad. You can turn it around before your wedding, no problem!

    Someone above me already suggested, but that is my secret to success. Track every single one of your calories for 1 week and just see how easy it is to reduce those calories. I know a lot of my calories in the beginning were coming from soda, so now I drink diet or just cut it out altogether and that’s easily 200-300 calories a day. It’s really just a numbers game!

    They also give you free workout videos and tell you how many calories you just burned. Then you can keep track of that, too. I know for me it helps to see everything written down and saved.

    I’ve lost 15 pounds since Christmas, in getting ready for my wedding in 2 months. There’s no magic to it, I can look at weeks where I exercised for 90 mins and lost 1-2 pounds and other weeks where I exercised 10 mins and gained a pound! So that’s what keeps me motivated.. Results are directly proportional to what you eat and how you move.

    Don’t worry, you can do it! Start now, though, so you have some time to ease into it. No one’s perfect so it’ll take a little longer than you first estimate. Just remember to always get back on that horse.

    @Karen- Treating myself with kindness, that’s a good motto. I need to write that on all the mirrors in my apartment!!

    @Dana- In all the information I have seen, drinking lots of water a day is really essential to weight loss, so that is definitely good advice. One diet I tried earlier this year suggested drinking 100 oz of water a day! I think my boss was starting to worry why I was in the bathroom so much during the day… haha! But that is definitely good advice, I need to be drinking more water.

    @*kay- no, you’re not a horrible person. It’s okay to laugh. I laugh at myself sometimes… if you liked this self-deprecating post, get ready for another Wednesday! πŸ™‚

    @Crystal- Thanks for your kind words. I think journaling, in any form, is good- must be why I love to blog! You and Karen both suggested I think I’m definitely going to check that out. As for me, I just got back from my first morning workout at the gym… I’m starting slow, but I know the results will be worth it.

    I know this is an older post – but i just had to comment since I just joined WW online this morning. All my life I’ve been a size 4 or 6 and for the past year and few months, I have been eating and drinking my way around my new city. Literally. I went from 118 on a 5’2 frame- to 151 lbs on what feels like a 4″10 frame now. I joined a gym several weeks ago (maybe a month?) and have been 4 times.
    Family members of mine have struggled with their weight all their lives and I was extremely lucky to eat whatever and whenever, and always be a skinny minny. I sure took it for granted.
    I’m not sure what you plan is to lose your weight – but I’m pretty excited about WW since I know it’s worked for a lot of people.
    You seem to have the determination and motivation so I’m sure you will do great with whatever plan you came up with.

    I definitely just realized I have been reading your blog on Pink Book – sometimes it takes me awhile to put 2 and 2 together. I want to join the boot camp… I used to work with Kelly and she is so sweet!

    I am thinking about the November class but my wedding is not until next October and since my ability to stick with things is more or less non-existent, I was thinking maybe I should wait until closer to the wedding.
