helping brides create beautiful weddings without breaking the bank

The search for my dress began in June. One of my bestest friends (and bridesmaids), S, was in town from California, and we had planned to go wedding dress shopping then. So my sister, C, (my matron of honor), S, and her sister, M, and I all went in search for the perfect wedding and bridesmaids' dresses. I wanted to keep my dress, including alterations and tax, under $1,000. I was pleasantly surprised with the prices at our first stop! We browsed around and after loading up the dressing room, I headed in to try them on. By the end of the first stop, I could be in a bridal fashion show, I was in and out of the dresses super fast! I had narrowed these selections down to about three favorites.

Myself, S, M, and C modeling different veils after dress shopping.

On another occasion my mother and I headed to at least four other stores, to make sure I saw just about every dress available in the greater Charlotte area. Now, my mother cries at any episode of Extreme Home Makeover so I surely thought that she would start tearing up and that would be my “sign” that I had on the perfect dress. After four stores, there were still no tears. One of the dresses from the first outing, kept popping back in my head, so I took my mom there to see that dress. FINALLY there were tears! I knew I had the right one. I ordered it on the spot!

I am a bit superstitious, so I won't be posting my dress until my wedding, but here is one of the other beautiful frocks that we found!

A couple of pointers for dress shopping:

  • Make sure that you know what your budget is, and stick to it. Don't even try on the dress that is twice your budget, because you will be heartbroken when you can not have it.
  • Keep an open mind, I swore up and down that i wanted a halter dress, but my perfect dress ended up being strapless.
  • It's good to bring mothers or bridesmaids with you to help you in and out of the dresses. But too many opinions can be distracting.
  • Corsets and rouching really are a girl's best friend! And a corset dress requires fewer alterations.
