How many guests did you have?

We had about 250 guests

What creative or personal aspects did you include in your wedding?

Most of the personal aspects that we included in our wedding were DIY projects.  I found two old doors at a barn sale, we sanded them down and made them look distressed, and then my dad built a frame for them.  I walked through these doors at the start of the aisle.  We made our own photo booth, which was really fun for our guests. We really focused on making our wedding theme Simple and Elegant.  It captured our personalities and our relationship.

Did you do any DIY projects or create any handmade items for your weddings?

We did a lot of DIY projects for the wedding.  Most of the decorations were handmade by myself and my family.  We used handmade flower boxes and purchased flats of flowers from Lowes to create our own centerpieces.  We made paper puffs that hung from the barn beams out of coffee filters and colored them with food coloring.  The rustic doors that I walked through before I went down the aisle were made by my parents.

What was the biggest thing you did to save money?

I think the biggest thing we did to save money was that we decided to DIY the majority of our wedding.  That ranged from making most of our own decorations and decided not to hire a wedding planner or wedding coordinator.  We also went with a catering company that did buffet style instead of charging per person.  I think that really cut out on some of the expenses.  (I know this isn’t just one thing, but I feel like we did a lot of great things to cut down on the cost!)

What’s the best advice you have for planning your wedding now that you’re on the other side?

My best advice would be to not focus on all the little details because at the end of the day, people don’t really notice the small things. They come to watch two people commit their love to each other and have a good time celebrating.

What was your biggest splurge?

My biggest splurge was my wedding dress.  I didn’t plan on spending that much money, but my sister wanted me to try it on just for fun before we even saw the price. Once I tried it on I fell in love with it! The limo was also a splurge, I know we didn’t really need it, but I figured we were cutting costs in so many other places, it was nice to go over the top on something.

What was your favorite detail?

My favorite detail was the décor inside of the barn.  We had string lighting all over, glass globes with candles in them, curtains draped on the doors, and pastel pink and yellow paper puffs.  It all came together to make a very romantic scene.

What is the most memorable moment of your day?

The most memorable moment of the day was exchanging our vows and saying I do.  The rest of the ceremony is a bit of a blur because I was so nervous.  But I will never forget the way I felt standing in front of him, professing my love for him.
