The walk down the aisle is probably THE most anticipated moment of any in weddings. It’s a very special moment and the music you select is very important.
Long before I was ever engaged I always knew that I’d walk down the aisle to a Stevie Wonder song. It was predestined. When I was just a seed in my mommy’s belly, my dad took headphones that looked something like this:
…and placed them on her stomach so that I would have a proper introduction to the musical genius that is Stevie Wonder. I admit it; I’ve always had a slight obsession with Stevie. At a young age, I was all about his music. It made me feel emotions I didn’t understand but I couldn’t break away from it. It was my music of choice when I sang in the shower or at karaoke. What more can I say? I LOVE Stevie! And in my mind, it was only fitting that my father would give me away as we were enveloped by the sounds of the man he introduced me to in the womb.
Well, I came across this song called, “The Walk,” written and performed by Nikki Leonti on YouTube. It captured everything I’d want to say to Sherrod on our wedding day if we were going to write our own vows. I felt her lyrics….Every. Single. Word.
Upon first hearing it, I melted and knew that I’d found my song. I felt a little guilty for cheating on Stevie Wonder, so I sat on it for a while but the song is so beautiful I couldn’t help it. It’s raw and there’s an honesty in it that I couldn’t walk away from. The only issue is that the recording may be a little too rough to play during my walk and I don’t know anyone who could master the feeling Nikki evokes with her voice in this song. She recorded a studio version with music, but her raw voice is so much more moving. I wish Nikki and I were besties so I could ask her to do me the honor of singing for me, but that’s not gonna happen. However, one of my sorority sisters is a self-taught musical genius and is polishing up the audio so that I can make my walk to “The Walk.”
Take a listen, go over the lyrics, and tell me what you think.
All out of breath
Asking what could be next
Send me dove
Send me a sign
I prayed for peace and I prayed for light
And out of the blue you stopped me in my tracks
I took in the moment and didn’t look back and stopped running…
Then I walk to you
And I will walk with you
Now and forever
and I will speak love
into your life
the hand that I give will hold on
when there’s darkened skies
we will walk it through
and this is my promise to you
Saying the words
is easy for me
when I see future
your face is all I see
The sun reminds me our day is here
the peace that I feel it tells me I’m ready
and into the blue I will follow the tracks and now in the moment
we never look back and stop running….
When our bodies grow weak
our love will grow stronger every time
Let us never forget the better when the worse tries to divide
“The Walk” is not a traditional wedding song; it’s more personal and that’s why I love it. I’ll have my moment with Stevie Wonder and my dad during the father-daughter dance. And I’m very much so looking forward to it.
