One way to score a great deal on your wedding dress is by shopping sample sales!

What is a sample sale?

Many local bridal shops will hold sample sales to sell their existing inventory of sample gowns in order to make room for new designs. A sample dress is a gown that brides try on in the store before they order their very own version.  Often, when a dress is discontinued, the sample gown is sold at a great price. Some of these dresses may be mildly worn as they’ve been used for the purpose of trying on in the shop, but will often be discounted significantly.

If you’ve got your eye on a designer gown, check with your local bridal shops to find out when they run their sample sales in order to try to snag your wedding gown on the cheap! This is a bit different than buying a pre-owned wedding dress, instead, you’ll be the first bride to wear the gown down the aisle!

Iconic bridal shop Kleinfeld is even known for their amazing sample sales — be sure to follow them for updates on their sales!

You don’t want to miss out on your local sample sales, so make sure to stay informed. Be sure to subscribe to your local bridal boutiques’ email newsletters for updates on sample sales in your area. Sample sales are a great way to get a designer wedding dress less than buying new.

Of course, you’ll have to consider sizing when it comes to purchasing a sample gown. Typically stores only carry one of a certain dress in-store, so you may have to do significant alterations to make a sample gown work for you. Keep potential alterations costs in mind when you’re on the hunt for your dream dress!

Potential cons of buying a sample wedding dress:

There is some risk to buying a sample wedding dress. Sample dresses are typically final sale, so there’s no returns or exchanges if you have a change of heart. There can also be extra wear to the dress because so many people tried it on. There may be small defects like missing beads or tiny tears that make the gown imperfect. But if the imperfections are something that wouldn’t be noticed or that a tailor could fix, it’s so worth it for the savings! If you are looking for a budget-savvy dress, look into buying a sample gown. It is a great way to find a unique designer dress at a great price!
