Fonts for DIY Wedding Invitations
If you’re thinking about creating your own invitations, save the dates, wedding, ceremony signs, and other paper wedding paper products you’ll want to make sure that you use the right font. A font that best matches your theme and personality. The font, along with the style of the invitation, sets the tone and is the first impression to your attendees. If you use the wrong font it can totally give a different vibe to your guests.
Unfortunately (or fortunately?), thousands of cheap or free wedding fonts are available online. That can make it super difficult to choose the right one. We know you’ve got your hands full planning your big day. That’s why we put together our favorite resources for wedding fonts. And we also included a few beautiful and unique fonts from each site.
Font Tips, Tricks & A Mini Lesson in Typography
Before we get to the fonts, though, we have some helpful tips and tricks:
We recommend checking out this useful page. You’ll find tips on downloading, extracting, and loading your new fonts for Microsoft Office or another editor. Keep in mind that some free versions of font do not include special characters, like punctuation or even ampersands or hashtags. This is to encourage users to purchase the paid version. Another option is Canva. This platform also offers fonts with a free membership. In addition, there are even more fonts when you upgrade to the Pro paid account. The fonts with a crown icon inside of Canva are only available with a paid monthly subscription.
Picking Fonts
Any good graphic designer or stationer will tell you that it is important to pick fonts that are easy to read. While an invitation written in hand calligraphy may be beautiful and insanely expensive it may also be hard to read. Therefore, it is a good idea to pair a serif or sans serif font with a script or calligraphy font when it comes to the key details.
For instance, a flowy cursive font for your or your partner’s name is a great idea as long as it is paired with a legible all-caps or letter case font. You don’t want guests to show up on the wrong date, time, or place because they couldn’t read your font!
Font Terms
If you are scratching your head with these terms don’t fret. It’s easy as ABC. You are currently reading a blog post written in a sans-serif font. Meaning there aren’t little serifs or “feet” at the end of each letter. This is a clean font with no frills.
A serif font is your classic Times New Roman, newspaper font, textbook, or book font. This font is known for its legibility and tradition. Each letter has a little extra stroke or line to it.
Script and calligraphy fonts have lots of swirls and swishes. A script font is more traditional and cursive, while calligraphy gives more of a handwritten feel. Of course, there are those fonts that are slightly between all four categories.
