We had 50 guests.
What creative or personal aspects did you include in your wedding?
Our ceremony was held on land that we own in rural southern Mississippi and was performed by the bride’s best friend. She, together with the bride and groom, wrote the text for the ceremony from scratch which allowed us to use language that truly resonated with us. The ceremony included our two children, who also received rings, and all four rings were passed around during the ceremony to receive silent blessings from family and friends. We also all planted trees together to start the orchard we had been wanting to begin for years! It’s so special now to have this tree that we know was planted by the groom’s father, and that tree was planted by this group of friends, etc.
Did you do any DIY projects or create any handmade items for your weddings?
Our plan was to use the woods as the background for our ceremony, and we thought that a simple and beautiful way to highlight that was to hang a wreath between two trees rather than build, buy, or rent anything to stand under or near. On the wedding day, things weren’t quite as ready as we had hoped. A friend who had flown in from California asked if there was anything that she could do, and I immediately said yes! I knew she was the perfect person for this job. She and her boyfriend went walking through our woods and those nearby and found the most beautiful plants to decorate the store-bought vine wreath. It was more beautiful than I even imagined!
It was a very family-filled affair! The bride’s father did so much work to ready the field where the ceremony was held, and her little sister created the headbands of flowers that the bride and her daughter wore. The bride’s grandparents donated cane syrup that they make every Fall, and our family filled small jars with the syrup for guests to take home. The bride also bought mixed vintage dinnerware from thrift stores to use at the reception, and her parents’ homes played host to the Welcome Dinner, Cocktail Hour, and the day-after Brunch!
What was the biggest thing you did to save money?
We opted out of getting a tent for our outdoor wedding. It was a risk, but in the end we decided against both the hassle and the expense. Since our plan was to hold a cocktail hour at the bride’s parents home before the wedding and then to walk to the ceremony site together, we decided that if it rained we could enjoy the rain or stay and hold the ceremony inside or on the covered porch.
What’s the best advice you have for planning your wedding now that you’re on the other side?
Know what you want and go with your gut as to when to compromise!

The hand-decorated wreath that hung behind us during the ceremony!
What is the most memorable moment of your day?
We walked from the bride’s parents house to the ceremony site together with our kids and with all of our guests following closely behind. It was so beautiful!
