How many guests did you have?

We sent out 350 invitations and 200 people came which is what we expected.

How did you meet?

Landon and I went to college together. We are both computer science majors so we had all of the same classes together. We ended up studying together for our classes and became good friends. By junior year of college, all of our friends and teachers thought we were dating, at least that’s what they would joke. Not long after that, we did start dating and ended up getting engaged in our senior year. We got married after graduation was over and after we started our new jobs.

What is your proposal story?

Landon has my best friend, Suzy, take me to get my nails done. We did that every few months so I just thought it was time to go again. When we got back to her house, Landon was there waiting for me. He wanted to take me out to lunch so he opened my door for me and then told me to keep my eyes closed. We drove for what seemed like forever! Finally, he had me open my eyes and he had a vase of flowers waiting for me. He came and opened my door and gave me the flowers.

We were at the Rose Garden and funny enough he gave me roses. He said that the Rose Garden probably wouldn’t appreciate him cutting some for me so he bought his own. We walked around for a while just talking and then he asked me if I could count to 12 for him. I said sure! I have a math minor so I can handle counting to 12. He started telling me one reason he loved me for every number I counted. I ended up saying 9 twice and we laughed for a long time. Apparently having a math minor does not mean I can count!

When he got to the 12th rose, he said “I will love you until the last rose dies” and he pulled out a rose from the vase and it was a fake rose made out of plastic! Then he took the rose and gave it to me and got down on one knee and opened the ring box. I saw the ring and I was so excited that I didn’t let him ask me to marry him! The ring was the one I wanted the most but right after we went to look at it together, they sold out. I was so surprised that he had the ring! He was like, I know your excited but at least let me finish, and we laughed again. He asked me to marry him and I said yes!

Tell us about your wedding vision.

Landon and I didn’t want a super elaborate wedding. We wanted to keep it simple and cheap. We knew we wanted to get married at our church and our church had a gym so we decided to have the reception there as well! I didn’t want to make either of our families drive all the way to our church (4-5 hours) and then make them drive somewhere else again for a reception. Landon and I picked the colors together. He wanted blue so I took a lighter shade of blue and matched it with coral because I knew I wanted to have flowers and coral is a pretty easy color to get for flowers. We ended up loving the colors!

Tell us about your attire choices.

I wanted to be different and Landon wanted the guys to wear gray. I wanted to incorporate the turquoise and coral for the guys so we found bow ties and alternated the guys. Of course, I had the girls dresses alternating as well so it would match symmetrically with the guys! I had the girls hold baby’s breath and it turned out really nice!

What was most important for you two while planning? Was there anything you chose to splurge on or skip?

The wedding ceremony was the most important. We wanted it to be special so we talked with our officiator and he had some good ideas that Landon and I tweaked together. I also didn’t want the guests to be bored while we did family pictures so we ended up using a giant roll of white paper to cover the tables. Then we put boxes of crayons on each end of the tables and coloring sheets at each spot! Landon’s boss mentioned that this was the most fun wedding he had been to because his girls were occupied the whole time!

What were your favorite parts of the day?

My favorite part was the individual pictures with Landon. It was special for us to have an hour just to ourselves and I think it made Landon less nervous overall. I also really enjoyed the reception and getting to dance with all of our friends and family!

Tell us about your wedding flowers.

Suzy put together the wedding flowers for us. She and her husband did an amazing job! At first, Suzy wasn’t too convinced about the baby’s breath, but I was determined so she did it anyway. We both ended up loving how all the flowers turned out!

Tell us about your wedding cake.

Landon and I wanted a super simple wedding cake. We had a small round cake that matched our wedding colors and sheet cakes! We had 2 chocolate, 2 white, and 2 carrot cake. Landon’s Aunt Joyce made our cakes for us. They were amazing, which is not surprising since she runs a bakery!

What did you do for favors?

We put candy in favor boxes for guests to take home. My mom and I had fun putting those together and spending time together before the wedding!

Please describe any handmade, DIY, or personal items.

I made our guest “book” for the wedding. We didn’t want a book that we’d put away on a shelf and never look at again so I painted a 36” by 24” canvas. I enjoy crafts and that was the most fun craft that I’ve ever done which made it even more special. What I made was a painted tree with two love birds in the tree to represent Landon and I. The guests sign their names in the leaves. It turned out amazing! We hung it in our living room so we will never forget!

We also made our own wedding invitations since we didn’t want to spend a lot of money on printing them.  So we came up with our own design and then used printing money we had left from our school year to print our invitations. Landon and I had fun making these together and we saved a lot of money.

I also made my own signs. I painted pieces of plywood for 3 signs. A no photos sign, having people seat themselves and a sign for people to post pictures with our hashtag. They were fun to make but ended up being bulky so I’m hoping to reuse them in the future.

Did you include any family heirlooms or special traditions?

We wanted to be unique so we didn’t use any heirlooms. We had the traditional first dance, daddy-daughter dance, and mother-son dance. Our wedding was pretty traditional overall.

Do you have any advice for couples planning their weddings now?

My advice would be to have fun with it. I loved wedding planning with Landon and we enjoyed spending the time together to plan our special day. It goes by super fast so enjoy it while you can!
