Learn how to make your own cornhole bean bags for your wedding reception
Yard games are such a fun addition to any wedding reception, and Cornhole is one of our favorites! In our DIY Cornhole Board Tutorial, we detailed how to construct and customize your own cornhole boards at a minimal cost. In this post, we’ll talk about the remaining pieces: making your own Cornhole beanbags!
How to Make Your Own Cornhole Beanbags
MATERIALS
In order for you to make the bean bags, you’ll need the following items:
- Duckcloth (heavy-duty canvas) in two different colors.
- Feed corn (this is super cheap, and can be bought by the bag or in bulk at Agway)
- Heavy-duty thread
- Liquid stitch (comes in a tube, available at craft stores)
- Sewing machine (if you have one…it makes this much, much easier)
INSTRUCTIONS
First, start by cutting your duck cloth into 7 x 7 inch squares. In Cornhole, each of the two teams gets four bean bags, meaning you’ll need to cut 8 squares of each color.
Using your sewing machine loaded with heavy-duty thread, pair two of your squares together, and stitch three out of the four sides together. Pro tip: make the seams approximately ½” inch from the edge of the squares for the best result.

For added protection, it’s best to double stitch each corner. You can also apply liquid stitch between the cloth, against the seams, and allow to dry.

After your liquid stitch is dry, turn the bags inside out and fill with approximately 16 ounces of corn. Pin your bags closed until all are filled.
Tucking the edges of the fabric inside the beanbag, sew the final seam, double-stitching the corners again.
Decorating Your Cornhole Bean Bags
If you want to decorate the beanbags, paint pens work really well. Metallic colors look especially great–make sure to choose one that contrasts sharply with your beanbag color.
If you want something a little more fancy, consider embroidering your Bean Bags with your monogram or wedding date! Don’t have an embroidery machine? (Who does?!) Consider hand-stitching designs onto your bean bags for a hipster vibe!
