Learn How to Make a DIY Floral Ceremony Backdrop!

Despite what a lot of Pinterest images lead you to believe, floral design is NOT rocket science. You’re the human, it’s a flower… standard natural hierarchy here people!

This video tutorial shows you step-by-step how to create a beautiful flower backdrop for your wedding ceremony. Once the ceremony is done, you could then repurpose it as a photo booth backdrop!

So the easy/fun part is creating the backdrop but I know you’re wondering about the big question…

What is this going to cost me?

To be honest, it depends on how extravagant you want to be. But we will break it down and give you true costs and alternatives so you could create this piece with a budget starting from $345—including the backdrop frame!

Full disclosure, most wholesale flowers are not sold by the stem but by the bunch. The recipe for the backdrop is by the stem and we would use the leftover stems from the wholesale bunch in other areas of the wedding.

Supplies You’ll Need:

First things first: Supplies. Here’s exactly what we used in this video tutorial:

Supplies Total: $206

Savvy Tip!

We know the backdrop stand may seem a little pricey for some, but just remember you can always think savvy and sell it after your wedding to let other brides use it!

Tips for a Mid-Budget Option

If you still want your DIY floral ceremony backdrop to have a lush look but at a more palatable price point, choose alternatives to the pricey flowers! By making a few simple swaps, you can achieve a similar look for a lower cost.

Suggested Savvy Swaps:

Spray roseMini Carnation
$3 per stem$1 per stem
DahliaCremone
$3 – $4 per stem$1.5 – $1.7 per stem
Garden RoseStandard rose
$5 – $6 per stem$2.2 – $2.5 per stem

Using chrysanthemums or cremones instead of dahlias gives you a similar look at half the cost– plus a longer-lasting flower! While garden roses are beautiful, they are among the most expensive flowers out there. You can get beautiful “standard” roses that look almost identical to garden roses at half the cost. We’d suggest using the Shimmer Rose or the Shukrani Rose.

Making these substitutions would save you $61, bringing the total cost to $390 including all of your supplies. That’s a lot more bang for your buck!

Floral Total: $184 + Supplies Total: $206

= Grand Total: $390

Tips for a Budget-Savvy Option

And because we want to give you ALL of the cost-saving alternatives for your own DIY floral ceremony backdrop, here’s some ideas that will:

✓ Give you a similar look
✓ Use fewer flowers
✓ Save you the most money
✓ Require the least amount of work to make

  1. Swap out the floral foam garland for a pre-made greenery garland. This means half of the work is already done for you, and then you’ll just need to add a few flowers on top. Bonus! This one is the most eco-friendly of the options because it does not require a floral foam garland.
  2. Use the more cost-conscious flower options listed below to achieve the same look and feel as the video tutorial.

3Burgundy SnapDragons$2.5 per stem $7.50
5Mauve Stock$1.5 – $ 1.8 per stem$9
