How did you meet?

We both have Type 1 Diabetes, so we met working as lifeguards at a Diabetes summer camp! What I thought was going to be a summer fling turned out to be a 6-year relationship leading to fur babies and a marriage!

What is your proposal story?

There was no proposal, really. We were sitting on the beach, waiting for a concert to start, and I just said to Charlie, “Let’s get married when we’re in Vegas!” And he said “Sure!”. So we scrambled some things together and went for it a month later!

Tell us about your wedding vision.

My only vision was something low key, inexpensive, and classic Vegas elopement. I loved the idea and history of the Little White Wedding Chapel, all the old school stars married there and the over-the-top backgrounds! I’m not a fussy person, so I wanted things to be simple and easy. I never wanted a big, fancy wedding, I just wanted to be married, so the Vegas wedding chapel seemed to give us a little glam along with the ease of the quick ceremony!

Tell us about your attire choices.

My only hard rule in the whole process was that my mom would make my outfit. She made her wedding dress, along with all my school dance dresses, so I knew she had to be involved. We decided on a little two-piece number in order to deal with the Vegas heat.

A special touch for my outfit was all of the vintage buttons my mom has in her collection that we used on the back of my top. I picked out ones that represent things in Charlie and my life. For example, the little lion buttons that represent both of us and our Leo zodiacs. My favorite button was the one my mom had kept from my grandmother’s flight attendant uniform from the ’50s.

Charlie wore a really lightweight suit that matched his baby blues and my shoes, which were an ode to Vegas legend, Elvis Presley’s Blue Suede Shoes.

What was most important to you two? Was there anything you chose to splurge on or skip?

The most important thing for us was to have fun and hang out with our family and friends. We kind of skipped most of the typical wedding stuff because we knew we didn’t want to start a marriage off on a bunch of debt. We also knew the friends and family that were going to be there wouldn’t care if we didn’t have any pomp or fanfare – that’s why they were invited!

I did splurge on nice makeup because I knew I would be doing my own face and I wanted to make sure I had quality products that would last through all my crying and laughing.

What were your favorite parts of the day?

The day was so hectic and wasn’t as easy as I had hoped, and I think a moment that represented that was when my veil got caught on a chandelier right after the ceremony. My new mother in law had to detangle me from the fixture! It was hilarious and I thought it was a perfect show of how life goes, luckily it was caught on camera!

Another memorable part was going down to downtown Vegas on Fremont street and getting our photos taken. Neither of us had been to that area and our photographer, Carrie, was awesome with her knowledge about the area. It was like a tour and photoshoot in one!

Tell us about your wedding flowers.

One of my best friends is a flower wizard and was able to put together boutonnieres and bouquets. She got the burlap with lace from a craft store and used a hot glue gun to bring it together instead of pins. All the flowers and greenery were from Costco, bought the day before the wedding and stored in the refrigerator until it was time to go to the wedding! She chose sunflowers because they’re my favorite and the roses to bring some romance into it. She spent around $175 total on the flowers.

Tell us about your wedding cake.

We didn’t have a wedding cake, we got churro sundaes at a restaurant called Nacho Daddy afterward!

What did you do for favors?

We had bubble guns for people to shoot off after the “I do’s”. My dad got into a pretty intense bubble battle with my uncle – another great memory!

Please describe any DIY, handmade, or personal details.

My flowers, my dress, and my veil were all hand made and DIY. We went to dinner at a place called Nacho Daddy after the ceremony as a bit of an inside joke. A few years before, my dad drunkenly agreed to pay for our wedding only if I served nachos at the reception! So this was our ode to that tequila-fueled agreement.

Did you include any family heirlooms or special traditions?

My grandmother’s flight attendant button is the closest I got to a family heirloom. Additionally, my wedding ring was made from old family jewelry melted down and designed by an old family friend/jeweler.

Do you have any advice for couples planning their weddings now?

I would advise you to not let anyone change your mind. If you want something, stand your ground. It’s your day!
