I had the opportunity to attend a press trip to Jamaica last month to experience some of what this gorgeous island has to offer for weddings and honeymoons. I was lucky enough to get to participate in a variety of fun activities that would be really great to enjoy with your new spouse while on your honeymoon, so obviously I want to share them with you! Of course, when you’re in a tropical paradise, you may be perfectly content to lay on the gorgeous sandy beaches – but if you’re looking for some things to add some extra excitement and unforgettable memories to your trip, these are a few honeymoon activities that really stood out to me.

Must-Do Honeymoon Activities in Jamaica

beach-hammock

Relax in a beach hammock

There’s something so relaxing and romantic about lying in a hammock on the beach while hearing a gentle rush of waves crashing into the shore. It bring the whole “laying on the beach” thing up a notch, don’t you think? These hammocks at the Hotel Riu Palace Jamaica in Montego Bay were conveniently located close to one of their all-inclusive bars, so it was the perfect way to grab a fruity drink and relax in the afternoon. Grab your new spouse and cuddle up in a hammock for a tender and tranquil way to spend an afternoon.

Swimming with Dolphins

Who hasn’t ever dreamt of swimming with dolphins? I am pretty sure that it definitely ranks on just about everyone’s bucket list. There’s something about swimming with dolphins that just seems so magical — and let me tell you from experience, it is a truly magical feeling! I was lucky enough to get to go to the Dolphin Cove Jamaica, where I got to swim with two adorable dolphins who were apparently boyfriend and girlfriend! We got to pet them, give them a kiss, and even take them for a ride with the help of instruction from knowledgeable and experienced trainers. It was honestly one of the coolest things I’ve ever done in my life, and something I’d definitely recommend if you’re looking for a fun and unforgettable honeymoon adventure!

Horseback Riding

On my recent trip to Jamaica, I visited the Rhodes Hall Plantation to do some horseback riding. The 550-acre property offered a variety of views and terrains for riding which was great for everyone from beginners to experienced riders. We not only rode horses across the historic plantation grounds but also got to ride into the shallow waters on the beach. We were in a relatively small group and there were several guides to instruct us along the paths which allowed for a safe and fun experience.

The guides were knowledgable and friendly – and pointed out several different local plants as we traveled across the property.  Following the hour-and-a-half-long ride, we were even given the opportunity to swim on horseback – a truly once-in-a-lifetime experience that would really add incredible memories to your honeymoon!

rafting

River Rafting

Another expedition I got to experience in Jamaica was rafting on the Martha Brae River. When I heard we were rafting, I expected something action-packed and adrenaline-filled, but this was actually a much more relaxing and romantic atmosphere, which is perfect for honeymooners!

We were guided down the Martha Brae by one of the 85 trained and licensed raft captains. Our captain paddled us along on a 30-foot bamboo raft (each of which is handmade) down a three-mile stretch of river. Our hour-long ride was scenic, and relaxing, and would definitely be a romantic experience to share on your honeymoon.

Indulge at the Spa

One of the gorgeous spas we visited was located at the luxurious Half Moon Resort. The Fern Tree Spa at Half Moon offers the ultimate in luxury and pampering, whether you’re looking to get pampered prior to your destination wedding or want to book a couple’s spa experience on your honeymoon.

After you indulge in a luxurious couple’s massage in one of the Fern Tree’s large spa rooms, you can retreat to a private porch where you and your new spouse can soak in a heavenly outdoor tub while enjoying champagne. Spend your afternoon unwinding in the sauna or enjoying the gorgeous pools and hot tubs that are exclusive to guests of the spa. It’s sure to be a romantic and heavenly experience you’ll never forget!

Learn some Jamaican History

No trip to Jamaica is complete without a visit to some of the island’s historic Great Houses. We got to tour the Greenwood Great House, which is located about 15 miles from Montego Bay. The Greenwood Great House was built in the 19th century and contains much of the original furniture of the home. You can see a full list of all the Great Houses in Jamaica here.

Taste some local fare

Jamaica is known worldwide for their amazing jerk chicken and pork, and one of the most famous local spots to try out this cuisine is none other than Scotchies. This no-frills local favorite serves flavorful and delicious jerked meats as well as some tasty side dishes in a casual, outdoor atmosphere.

The meat at Scotchies is barbecued to perfection over pimento tree wood and served in tin foil or styrofoam — the best places I’ve ever eaten let the food speak for itself, and Scotchies was no exception! Wash down your delicious meal with an ice-cold Red Stripe or island favorite, Ting!

Catamaran Cruise

Last but not least, we took a trip aboard the Dreamer Catamaran for a romantic sunset champagne cruise. Onboard you’ll get to experience a beautiful Jamaican sunset while enjoying champagne or other drinks from the onboard bar, as well as some heavy hors d’oeuvres and the musical stylings of a jazz sax0phone player – quite the memorable and romantic evening!

This is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to fun things to do in Jamaica. I can’t wait to return someday and add more to my list!
