Did you do any DIY Projects or create any handmade items for your wedding?

We picked up china tea cups from Goodwill and boxed them up as party favors. That was as close as we came to DIY. We also gave everyone a copy of Sharon’s favorite book: “The Book of Joy”

What creative or personal aspects did you include in your wedding?

We picked music that was meaningful to us – The Rainbow Connection, What A Wonderful World. Then at the end, we had everyone join a conga line and danced our way to the reception to the tune of “We are Family.” It was important to us to bring a sense of joy and whimsy to the day and our friends and family rose to the occasion!

What is the most memorable moment of your day?

Kissing on the steps of the church surrounded by bubbles. Singing “lah-da-dee-da-dee-da-doooooooo” at the end of Rainbow Connection (and hearing everyone singing along). Saying our vows. And, of course, the conga line!

What was the biggest thing you did to save money?

We had a small wedding party and let them wear whatever they wanted. That may not have saved money per se, but it definitely kept things simple.

What was your biggest splurge?

Having our hair and makeup done professionally. At first we thought it was unnecessary. After all, we know how to do our hair and makeup. But Grace did a fantastic job and gave us great looks that lasted all day long.

What was your favorite details?

Our outfits. Sharon wore a blue velvet suit custom made on Savile Row, and Sarah wore a brightly colored dress that her Mom had found in a thrift store back in the 60s. No poofy white dresses for us!

What’s the best advice you have for planning your wedding now that you’re on the other side?

Think about who you are as a couple and make the wedding a celebration of your uniqueness. Forget generic — be you!
