The wedding cake is one of the main events of the special day, and can cost a pretty penny to have made professionally. If you’re considering DIYing your wedding cake, that likely means you’ll be transporting it yourself as well. So, we’ve put together a step-by-step guide on transporting a wedding cake without mishaps. Follow these tips, and you and your guests will have every reason to save room for dessert!

How To Transport A Tiered Wedding Cake

Nine times out of ten, wedding cakes are tiered. Traditionally, the bride’s cake is a tiered wedding cake, and the groom’s cake is only one layer. Here’s how to transport a multi-layered cake perfectly.

Pro Tip: Transport the Wedding Cake in Layers

A step-by-step guide to safely transporting a wedding cake:

  • Securely wrap each tier individually in cling film. Doing so will help keep the layers from sliding around during transport.
  • Place a non-slip mat or shelf liner in the vehicle to prevent the cake tiers from sliding during the journey.
  • Ensure the vehicle’s interior is clean and free from debris or contaminants.
  • Adjust the vehicle’s air conditioning to maintain a cool and stable temperature during transport.
  • Drive cautiously and avoid sudden movements, sharp turns, or abrupt stops.
  • Upon arrival at the venue, carefully transport the cake tiers inside.
  • Assemble the cake layers and add any frosting/icing to make the tiers seamless and beautiful.
  • Conduct a final inspection to ensure no visible damages or imperfections and fix any minor issues as needed.
  • Coordinate with the venue staff regarding the storage and display of the cake until the cake-cutting ceremony.

Helpful Tips for Cake Assembly and Stability

Your frosting choice masters. While buttercream is more delicious (and generally more affordable), a fondant cake can better withstand changes in temperature and humidity.

Fortify your cake’s structure. Make sure your cake has a strong foundation with dowels and sturdy pieces for each layer. A cake tier stacking kit might be a good investment for added security.

Assemble onsite if possible. Even if you’ve made a buttercream wedding cake, leaving the tiers separate during transport eliminates potential falls, spills, or topples of a tiered cake.

Plan Your Route and Schedule

Before the big day, take the time to plan your transportation route. If you aren’t delivering the cake, chat with the person who will be to make sure they know what they’re doing. Then, have them (or you if you’re doing it) choose the most direct and smoothest route possible, avoiding bumpy roads and construction zones.

Be sure also to factor in any potential traffic delays or detours. Allocate extra time in your schedule for unforeseen circumstances to prevent any last-minute stress.

Place a non-slip mat or shelf liner on the flat surface of your vehicle for when you place the cake on it. Doing so will prevent the cake from sliding during transit.

Prepare the Vehicle

Choose a vehicle with ample space and a flat surface for the cake. Large vans or cars that can remove seats are ideal for transporting cakes. If possible, use a vehicle with a cargo area separate from the passenger area to minimize any disturbances.

Clean the interior to avoid any dirt or debris coming into contact with the cake because you may or may not have something over it to protect it, depending on the type of cake and icing you selected.

Even if it may be cool outside, adjust the air conditioning to maintain a cool temperature inside the vehicle to prevent the cake from melting.

Prepare the Cake for Transportation

Preparing a wedding cake for transportation is crucial in ensuring its safe arrival at the venue. You may need to disassemble the cake’s tiers. Don’t fret – this is normal and even suggested when transporting multi-tiered cakes.

  1. Start by disassembling the cake into separate tiers to maintain structural integrity during transit. Then, place a piece of cardboard, foam, or other flat material between the levels to prevent them from shifting during transport.
  1. Place the cake tiers on the non-slip mat, ensuring they are stable and secure. If the layers are transported separately, place each level in a sturdy cake box with a fitted lid. Wrap the cake box closed with elastic bands or straps so it won’t open during the journey.
  1. If you don’t want to separate the pieces, you can place a piece of cardboard (or other flat material) between each tier to keep them from shifting and ensure that the tiers are entirely covered with cling film. In addition, it may be helpful to use strips of tape to hold the cling film in place.

Here’s a pro tip: Use non-toxic tape or a thin layer of buttercream icing on the board to securely adhere to it without damaging the exterior design.

Drive Carefully and Stay Vigilant

When driving, take special care to avoid sudden movements, such as sharp turns or abrupt stops. Drive slowly over speed bumps and around corners to minimize any impact on the cake. Be extra cautious when entering and exiting the vehicle, as sudden movements can damage the cake.

Reassemble the Cake at the Venue

Once you’ve arrived at the venue, carefully bring the cake tiers inside one at a time. If the tiers of your cake were transported separately, reassemble the cake on-site.

As stated earlier, use dowels, supports, or stacking systems to maintain the cake’s structural integrity.

And if the cake requires any additional decoration, such as fresh flowers, faux flower cake decorations, or cake toppers, add these elements once the cake is safely assembled and not before!

Conduct a Final Inspection

Conduct a final inspection to ensure there are no visible damages or imperfections. You may see some slight mashes from the transport, so, if necessary, bring a small spatula or icing smoother with you when transporting the cake so you can fix any minor flaws.

Once satisfied with the cake’s appearance, take a few pictures for your records and enjoy this beautiful creation! Keep the cake all in one piece is worth celebrating!

Before You Go

As you learn how to transport a wedding cake, the first tip is to do so with careful planning and attention to detail. This tip will help keep your cake intact with minimal flaws, if any, and arrive at the venue looking as stunning as it tastes. In addition, safely transporting your wedding cake will add to this special day, making it even more unforgettable.
