The ticket is often the cheapest part. Here’s what flights, hotels and fees really add up to for 10 once-in-a-lifetime honeymoons.

JB-Headshot-2024

Some couples want a beach chair and a cocktail. Others want the trip they’ll still be talking about at their 25th anniversary: snorkeling the Great Barrier Reef, watching the sun come up from a hot air balloon, or standing at Machu Picchu after an early bus ride up the mountain.

If you’re in the second group, this guide is for you. We took the 10 most-wanted bucket list experiences in the world, ranked by how often people search for them, and turned each one into a real plan for a bucket list honeymoon. For every one of these bucket list honeymoon destinations, you’ll get the cost of the experience for two, what flights and hotels are actually running, the best time to go, and the one rule you’ll wish someone had told you sooner.

How we priced these honeymoons

The list of 10 comes from a travel report by Duel.com (October 2026), which ranked bucket list experiences by monthly search demand. That’s where its role ends. Every price, fee, and rule for these bucket list honeymoon destinations comes from the official park, government, or operator source, linked right next to the number, and we checked each one in October 2026.

Flights are the lowest round-trip economy fare for two adults from the New York area on Google Flights, searched October 15, 2026, for dates in each destination’s good season. Hotel ranges are the typical nightly rate across the first page of Google Hotels results (mostly 4-star) for the same dates. Prices move every day, so treat these as a realistic starting point, not a quote.

The 10 most-wanted bucket list honeymoons, ranked

Here are the 10 bucket list honeymoon destinations, in order of how many people dream about each one.

1. Great Barrier Reef, Australia

The reef tops the list for good reason. Base yourselves in Cairns and pair a day on the outer reef with rainforest and beaches.

  • The experience: a full-day outer reef cruise from Cairns costs A$317 per adult, about US$223 (Sunlover Reef Cruises), so about $446 for two. On a tighter budget, a Green Island day trip is A$127, about US$89 each (Great Adventures). The reef’s daily environmental charge of A$8.50 per person is usually already in your cruise fare (Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority).
  • Flights for two: from $3,105 round trip, New York to Cairns, June 7 to 17, 2027.
  • Hotels: most 4-star Cairns hotels ran about $110 to $185 a night for June 2027.
  • When to go: the best time to visit the Great Barrier Reef is May to October, outside stinger (jellyfish) season, which runs roughly November to April (Intrepid Travel).
  • Days needed: plan on three or four nights in Cairns.

Know before you book: if your dates fall in stinger season, you’ll be wearing a full-body stinger suit in the water. It’s not glamorous, but it means you can still go in the Australian summer.

2. Milford Sound, New Zealand

Milford Sound is waterfalls pouring off sheer cliffs straight into a fjord, and it’s the most romantic boat ride on this list. It gets over one million visitors a year (NZ Department of Conservation), so go early in the day if you can.

  • The experience: a two-hour cruise is NZ$199 per person, about US$115 (Bookme listing for RealNZ), or about $230 for two. Most international visitors also pay New Zealand’s NZ$100 visitor levy each (NZ Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment).
  • Flights for two: from $2,858 round trip, New York to Queenstown, February 8 to 18, 2027.
  • Hotels: Queenstown is pricey in summer. Most 4-star hotels ran about $210 to $470 a night for February 2027.
  • When to go: the warmer months are easiest. The Department of Conservation warns that winter, May to September, is the most hazardous time to drive the Milford Road (NZ DOC).
  • Days needed: one full day from Te Anau, more if you want Queenstown time.

Know before you book: there’s no fuel or shops between Te Anau and Milford Sound, so fill up before you go (same DOC source). If you’re already flying to Australia for the reef, adding New Zealand is the smartest way to get two bucket list trips out of one long-haul flight.

3. Machu Picchu, Peru

About 1.6 million people visited Machu Picchu in 2025 (Andina), and it still feels like a secret when the clouds lift off the ruins. A Machu Picchu honeymoon is an adventure with real history baked in.

  • The experience: a foreign adult ticket is S/152, plus a S/11 conservation surcharge from May 2026 (Expreso). That’s about $48 each, or roughly $96 for two. Add the round-trip train from Ollantaytambo, about $110 to $150 per person (LatAm Travellers), and the shuttle bus up the mountain, about $24 round trip each (Inca Rail).
  • Flights for two: from $1,442 round trip, New York to Cusco, May 10 to 20, 2027.
  • Hotels: most 4-star Cusco hotels ran about $115 to $190 a night for May 2027.
  • When to go: the dry season, May to October (Intrepid Travel).
  • Days needed: three to four, including time in Cusco to get used to the altitude.

Know before you book: entry is capped at 5,600 people a day in high season (Andina), and every ticket is tied to a set time and route. Buy your tickets the moment your dates are firm.

4. Galapagos Islands, Ecuador

If you want one trip that is the whole honeymoon, this is it. Sea lions on the beach, giant tortoises, and a small boat that becomes your floating hotel. Only 290,404 people visited in 2025 (Galapagos Government Council), so it still feels wild. Here’s the full Galapagos honeymoon cost, line by line.

  • The experience: the national park fee is $200 per foreign adult (Galapagos Conservation Trust), plus a $20 transit card (Galapagos Insiders), so $440 for two before you set sail.
  • The cruise: for May 2027, a 7-day G Adventures cruise started at $2,925 per person, and a 6-day Intrepid cruise at $4,145 per person (Global Journeys). Your cruise is your lodging, so there’s no separate hotel line here.
  • Flights for two: from $1,412 round trip, New York to Baltra (Galapagos), May 3 to 13, 2027.
  • When to go: any time of year works. Visits peak in March and April (Galapagos Government Council report).
  • Days needed: five days minimum for a cruise, a week if you can.

Know before you book: the park fee is paid in cash, in US dollars, when you land (Galapagos Insiders). Bring it, along with patience for the tiny airport.

5. Cappadocia hot air balloons, Turkey

Picture this: a sky full of balloons rising over a valley of rock chimneys at sunrise. About 754,000 people took a balloon ride in Cappadocia in 2025 (Bengütürk, citing Turkish civil aviation data), and nearly every one of them has the photo to prove it. A Cappadocia hot air balloon honeymoon gets you that photo, plus a cave hotel to come home to.

  • The experience: a one-hour flight starts at €175 per person, about $202 (Butterfly Balloons), or about $403 for two.
  • Flights for two: from $1,782 round trip, New York to Kayseri, May 3 to 13, 2027.
  • Hotels: this is where Cappadocia shines. Most cave hotels in Göreme ran about $65 to $185 a night for May 2027, so a cave suite is well within reach.
  • When to go: spring and autumn (GoTürkiye).
  • Days needed: two to three nights.

Know before you book: flights depend on the wind, and a regulator decides each morning whether balloons can go up. Book your balloon for your first morning so a cancellation can roll to the next day (GoTürkiye).

6. Mount Kilimanjaro, Tanzania

Of all the adventure honeymoon destinations on this list, this is the one where you earn your views. Kilimanjaro is the tallest mountain in Africa.

  • The experience: a 7-day Machame route climb runs $2,799 to $2,939 per person with park fees and two hotel nights included (Ultimate Kilimanjaro). That’s about $5,600 to $5,900 for two, and the most expensive experience on this list.
  • Flights for two: from $2,096 round trip, New York to Kilimanjaro, January 18 to 28, 2027.
  • When to go: January to March, or June to early November. Skip the long rains in April and May (Kandoo Adventures).
  • Days needed: about nine, counting arrival and departure nights.

Know before you book: the US State Department currently rates Tanzania Level 3, “Reconsider Travel” (travel.state.gov). Read the full advisory before you book, buy travel insurance that covers high-altitude trekking, and decide together whether it fits the trip you want.

7. Great Wall of China

The Great Wall might be the biggest bargain on this list once you’re on the ground. The Badaling section costs ¥40 at peak times, about $6 per person (Beijing Municipal Government), so about $12 for two.

  • Flights for two: from $1,847 round trip, New York to Beijing, April 19 to 29, 2027.
  • Hotels: most 4-star Beijing hotels ran about $75 to $170 a night for April 2027.
  • When to go: September to November is ideal. Skip China’s Golden Week holiday, October 1 to 7, when crowds are at their peak (China Highlights).
  • Days needed: one day trip from Beijing, built into a longer China itinerary.

Know before you book: tickets are booked under your real name with your passport (Beijing Municipal Government). Check China’s current entry requirements for your passport well before you go.

8. Taj Mahal, India

The Taj Mahal was built as a monument to love, which makes it hard to beat as a honeymoon stop. About 6.9 million people visited in India’s 2024-25 fiscal year (PTI via The Week).

  • The experience: a foreign visitor’s ticket, including the main mausoleum, is ₹1,300, about $14 per person (Taj Mahal official site). That’s under $30 for two.
  • Flights for two: from $1,491 round trip, New York to Delhi, February 8 to 18, 2027.
  • Hotels: most 4-star hotels in Agra ran about $45 to $130 a night for February 2027.
  • When to go: October to March. April to June is extremely hot, and July to September is monsoon season (Rough Guides).
  • Days needed: one to two, with an overnight in Agra so you can go at sunrise.

Know before you book: the Taj Mahal is closed on Fridays (official site). Plan your Agra night around it, and check India’s visa rules early.

9. Pyramids of Giza, Egypt

The last surviving wonder of the ancient world, and it’s a short ride from central Cairo. Pair it with the Grand Egyptian Museum next door for a full day you won’t forget.

  • The experience: going inside the Great Pyramid of Khufu costs EGP 1,500 per person, a price set in January 2025 (Egypt Independent). General admission to the plateau is a separate ticket, so check the current price on Egypt’s official ticketing site before you go.
  • Flights for two: from $1,409 round trip, New York to Cairo, March 1 to 11, 2027.
  • Hotels: most 4-star hotels near the pyramids and in central Cairo ran about $45 to $120 a night for March 2027.
  • When to go: October to April. June to August is the hottest stretch (Intrepid Travel).
  • Days needed: one to two.

Know before you book: go first thing in the morning, before the heat and the crowds.

10. Grand Canyon, USA

The only no-passport pick on the list, and one of the easiest bucket list honeymoon destinations to plan. The park logged 4,419,494 visits in 2025 (National Park Service data via the Arizona Office of Tourism). (If it’s calling to you even before the wedding, here’s a real couple’s Grand Canyon elopement.)

  • The experience: entry is $35 per private vehicle for seven days. Non-US residents 16 and older also pay $100 per person as of January 2026 (National Park Service).
  • Flights for two: from $833 round trip, New York to Phoenix, April 12 to 19, 2027.
  • Hotels: most hotels in Tusayan, just outside the park, ran about $150 to $275 a night for April 2027. The historic El Tovar inside the park was about $460.
  • When to go: spring (April to mid-June) and fall (September to November) (My Grand Canyon Park).
  • Days needed: one to two, as part of a Southwest road trip.

Know before you book: the North Rim reopened in May 2026 after the Dragon Bravo fire (National Park Service). Check trail closures before you plan a hike.

Cheap to see, expensive to reach

Here’s the part most roundups of bucket list honeymoon destinations skip. The Great Wall (about $6) and the Taj Mahal (about $14) cost under $15 a person to enter. Meanwhile, a Kilimanjaro climb runs close to $3,000 a person, and the Galapagos adds a $200 park fee before you’ve even boarded a boat.

So how much does a bucket list trip cost, really? Look at the table again. For most of these trips, the experience is the smallest line on the bill. Flights for two to Cairns cost about seven times as much as the reef cruise for two. The Taj Mahal ticket is less than one night in a nice Agra hotel.

That changes how you should choose. Instead of asking “can we afford Machu Picchu?”, ask “can we afford getting to Peru and staying a week?” Our breakdown of the average honeymoon cost is a good benchmark, and these tips on how to find cheap flights for your honeymoon go after the biggest line item first.

Which bucket list honeymoon fits your budget

Not all of these bucket list honeymoon ideas need to be the whole trip. Here’s how these bucket list honeymoon destinations sort out by how much of your trip (and budget) they take over.

Easy add-ons

The Great Wall, the Taj Mahal, the Pyramids, and the Grand Canyon cost very little once you’re there. Add one to a trip you’re already planning, whether that’s a broader tour of China, India, or Egypt, or a Southwest road trip. If you love the idea of an iconic trip for less, our guide to honeymoon dupes has more lookalike swaps.

Build a week around it

Four of these bucket list honeymoon destinations deserve a trip of their own: Machu Picchu, Cappadocia, Milford Sound, and the Great Barrier Reef. Each one anchors a one-week honeymoon nicely: Cusco and the Sacred Valley, a cave hotel and Istanbul, or a reef-and-fjord combo across Australia and New Zealand.

The once-in-a-lifetime splurge

The Galapagos and Kilimanjaro are the bucket list honeymoon destinations that become the whole honeymoon, and they’re priced like it. If this is your splurge, our guide to an affordable luxury honeymoon shows where to save so you can spend on the part that matters.

How to pay for a bucket list honeymoon without debt

You don’t need a trust fund to take a once-in-a-lifetime honeymoon. You need a plan for the two biggest costs, flights and hotels, and a way to pay for them that doesn’t follow you home.

The first tool is travel rewards. Planning a wedding means spending a lot of money in a short window, which happens to be exactly what credit card sign-up bonuses are built around. Routed carefully, spending you were already going to do can cover a big chunk of your flights. The non-negotiable: pay every card in full, every month, or the interest wipes out the rewards. Our guide to how to book your honeymoon with travel rewards walks through the strategy, and The Budget-Savvy Honeymoon ebook goes deeper.

The second tool is your guests. A honeymoon fund lets family and friends give you a reef cruise or a balloon ride instead of another set of towels, and plenty of couples are now choosing the honeymoon over the wedding when they decide where the money goes.

Bucket list honeymoon planning tips

A few habits make bucket list honeymoon destinations easier, and cheaper, to pull off.

  • Book the limited stuff first. Machu Picchu tickets, Galapagos cruises, and Kilimanjaro dates sell out. Lock those in, then build flights and hotels around them.
  • Check the travel advisory and get insurance. Look up your destination on the State Department’s advisory page before you book, and buy a policy that covers what you plan to do.
  • Leave a buffer day. Balloons in Cappadocia and boats in Milford Sound depend on the weather, so don’t schedule your big moment on your last day.
  • Be a good guest. Reef and Galapagos rules exist to protect fragile places. Follow your guide, keep your distance from wildlife, and leave nothing behind.
  • Watch the small fees. Park charges, visitor levies, and timed-entry tickets add up. These money-saving honeymoon tips cover the rest.
