What was your budget?

  • Bride: $287
  • Groom: $55
  • Son: $90
  • Ceremony decor: $80
  • Flowers: Gifted
  • Reception decor and supplies: $261
  • Food: $250 ($125 of that was a wedding gift)
  • Cake: Gifted
  • Photos: Gifted
  • Ceremony venue: $350
  • Reception venue: Gifted
  • Hair: $20

We had a max budget of $2000, but we ended up spending only $1,248.

How many guests did you have?

We had around 80 guests.

What creative or personal aspects did you include in your wedding?

My husband is a welder by trade and we had fun incorporating welding into the wedding. For example, our ceremony arch was our wagon wheel swing my husband fabricated and welded, minus the actual swing.

Also, my bouquet featured a welded rose that he made for me.

Lastly, my Matron-of-Honor designed our invitations and she used welding sparks as the background image on our invite.

Did you do any DIY projects or create any handmade items for your weddings?

The night before our wedding, a bunch of girlfriends and I arranged the bouquets and made the boutonnieres. Also, all food was grilled on-site at our reception by wedding guest volunteers, mainly “the dads.”

What was the biggest thing you did to save money?

I found a venue that allowed outside food and we made it all ourselves. We also put BYOB (bring your own booze) on the wedding invite. We knew our friends and family like to have a few drinks, but we just didn’t want to spend the money on booze. This was a way that we could save and our guests could be happy and have a fun time.

What’s the best advice you have for planning your wedding now that you’re on the other side?

You’ll get a lot of unsolicited advice, but don’t let it get you down. Just smile and nod. It’s your day and you know exactly what you want.

Also, if a venue is requiring you to supply liability insurance, check with your homeowner’s insurance. My Matron of Honor’s policy includes venue liability insurance at no additional charge, so we used her’s and saved around $300.

What was your biggest splurge?

Probably the farm where we had the ceremony! We absolutely love that place! It’s one of the best things to do in our tiny town. We always have such a blast, so, I was very happy to support them by having our wedding there. Plus, our guests could pet the animals and they even had a wedding crashing giant tortoise, Dizzy, who would periodically make appearances.

What was your favorite detail?

The gorgeous cake my brother-in-law made. I gave him a few things that I wanted, namely the color scheme, but I had no idea what he was going to do. When I first saw it walking into the reception venue, I was awestruck. It was more stunning than I could have imagined. He rocked that cake.

What is the most memorable moment of your day?

Our first dance. We have always joked that the song “Grow Old With You” from The Wedding Singer (by Adam Sandler) was our song. The weekend he proposed, he played that song as we headed out of town. So, when it came to picking a song, we knew that had to be it. During the dance, it was nice to have a few minutes together where it was just us, without anyone trying to pull us away or needing help with something.
