Red and Black Summer Wedding
Sydnee + Troy
What was your wedding budget? Please provide a budget breakdown.
Troy and I were blessed with the means to not have to plan a strict budget, but were both raised to be pretty frugal… so we cut a lot of corners. We spent under $9,000 total, which includes the venue, coordinator, ceremony, reception, music, rings, attire and the week-long honeymoon. We borrowed most of our decorations, paid a small fee for the venue (our church), and had a family member’s business cater. A family member made our cakes, another did our flowers, friends did hair and makeup, and family set up and tore down the whole event.
- Venue: $500
- Photographer: $1150
- Candy table: $200
- Wedding dress: $152
- The remainder of our total was spent on our honeymoon and rings.
How many guests did you have?
We had about 250 guests.
How did you meet?
Troy and I both attended a very small private school, the University of Mobile, but somehow didn’t meet until senior year. I had been attending a church for three years when Troy gave his life to the Lord and began attending. We met through mutual friends, but it wasn’t until we went on a mission trip together that I finally learned his name and got to know him.
What is your proposal story?
On our first date, Troy took me to the beach to watch the sunset on a landing and then eat dinner on the water. Unfortunately, when I took my sandals off on the beach that evening someone had stolen them. About a year later, Troy took me to the same place to enjoy dinner together but first brought me back to the same landing to give me a gift. He bought me new sandals but had one more gift. He proposed on the beach, with all our family and friends waiting for us at the same restaurant behind the landing. He even flew in my family from Wisconsin to celebrate with us.
Tell us about your wedding vision.
More than anything, Troy and I wanted the gospel to be proclaimed at our wedding. We were married on June 30th, and had it at our church in Mobile, with about 250 friends and family members there to celebrate. Our college pastor from church, who poured into us immensely both as single people and as a couple, officiated the wedding. Our colors were navy and burgundy.
Tell us about your attire choices.
I wore an A-line sheath, lace dress with an open back. I love it more than any dress I’ve ever seen—and I ordered it online for only $152. Troy wore a navy suit, ivory shirt, and burgundy bow tie.
What was most important to you two? Was there anything you chose to splurge on or skip?
We really wanted it to be meaningful, all things pointing to the Lord and his goodness. We also wanted everyone to feel comfortable and have fun, so we had lots of games and dancing, as well as a photo booth. We tried to make it simple to save some money for the future, but we did splurge on food. We had southern foods-chicken and pork in barbecue sauce, mac n cheese, potatoes, and green beans, with two cakes and an open bar filled with candy. We also served Flavor Ice cool pops during the reception.
What were your favorite parts of the day?
My favorite parts of the day were getting ready with my bridesmaids and eating Chick Fil A nuggets while being visited by friends and family from both Alabama and Wisconsin. One of my favorite memories was hanging out with the flower girls as well. Ayla and Paisley who are 4 and 3, just kept staring at me and smiling in awe of my dress and makeup. They told me I looked like a princess. One of the best parts of the day was walking down the aisle with my dad, just looking out and knowing every face staring back at me. I have never felt so loved.
Do you have any advice for couples planning their wedding now?
My advice to couples planning their weddings now is to do it the way they want too—not stressing too much about what is trendy, or how to make it absolutely perfect. But to remember why you are doing this. I would remind them to look out at everyone there and take in the moment. It goes by so fast. This is the day all the people you love are in the same place to celebrate you and the glorious promise of love you are committing to. It’s so Beautiful.
