What creative or personal aspects did you include in your wedding?
We wanted our elopement to be small and intimate, so the most personal aspect for us was that we only had our parents there. We walked up to Cathedral Rock in Sedona for photos because we wanted to have our own moment up there alone.
Did you do any DIY projects or create any handmade items for your weddings?
Steph is South African, so the flowers we chose were proteas – the national flower of South Africa – that we brought in and then put together ourselves!
What was the biggest thing you did to save money?
Not inviting anybody! Because we didn’t have guests, we didn’t need a reception. Because there was no reception, there was no food, no alcohol, or no venue cost. The only thing we spent money on was ourselves.
What’s the best advice you have for planning your wedding now that you’re on the other side?
Our best advice is to be as organized as possible and make sure you have fail-safes in place in case there are any bumps in the road.
Take your time choosing the people behind the camera for you. We did that, and met some lovely people, but we chose Kali and Tyler who made our day so much easier than we’d envisaged.
What was your biggest splurge?
The photographers, because it was the most important aspect for us. We wanted to make sure it was a day that we could look back on forever – so we went for a photo/video combo, and it turned out brilliantly!
What was your favorite detail?
My favorite detail was Steph’s veil. She wasn’t sure about having one, but we were advised that it’d be really good for the photos. They were right!
What is the most memorable moment of your day?
For me as the groom, there was a moment where Steph was having her solo pictures taken and I looked over at her and just thought, “Wow, she looks incredible”.
As a couple, our most memorable moment was when we finally got to the top of Cathedral Rock and saw the view first-hand. Her in her wedding dress, me in my suit; it was stunning.
